The reality is that organised religion doesn't seem to work. It turns people into hateful lemmings and it's not really compassionate.

I agree and that was surely never its intent. It makes me wonder why this is if something so true how can people argue so intensely over the validity or different interpretations of it? Here is an idea for a religion, picture a world of balance where everything can exist in peace with minimal suffering and work toward it. If were good enough we can call the result heaven. We can transcend suffering and we create a world wide garden of Eden which combats problems collectively as a whole in a sensible way as a worldwide community.
with a worldwide community working toward a better world for all species. Things like Ebola would not be such a problem and species would stop disappearing form the face of the earth. we could get rid of a need for money and we could work on not for profit ways to solve all the suffering we have on earth. Nobody is saying it would be easy but if we could unite the whole world toward building a worldwide utopia. and using our abilities to maintain such a world we could live much longer and better lives. We really need less religion and more compassion.
