Anyone surprised that taking what is more or less a vacation can have an effect on your emotional well being?
Or laughter
Or petting your cat
Or eating chocolate
Or exercise
Or (fill in the blank with a thousand other things)
awesome
Maybe they could do a study on nonreligious people.
At first I thought this was about "Sexual retreats" improving the feel-good chemical systems in the brain. Shoot. What a disappointment to re-read the word "spiritual"!
So going away for a long weekend with people who share your fantasy makes you feel good. Who would have thought it?
Imagine an atheists' retreat. Two or three days of continual debate with highly intelligent people who like to dispute every point would be stimulating but exhausting. Be sure to pack some prozac and a defibrillator.
Just before I started my residency. I had vacationed in houston Texas where I happened to visit medical centre and most of the Hospitals. The Doctors there were fantastic and the work done there was unbelievable. It was as the theist would say a religious experience for, at least a life altering one. I came back with a new vigour.
I guess what I would define as religious would be different from what someone else would (in this context ofcourse). There need not be any thing divine here to make you feel the way you do. It just needs to be something close to heart.
