What's with these spamming attacks, they seem to getting worse as well. Is this a spiteful theistic revenge for having an atheist leaning forum in the US? It seems relentless these days. What on earth do people get from this kind of puerile disruption anyway?

This seems like a lot of trouble to go to just to annoy strangers, or am I overestimating how difficult it is to open new accounts and automate this kind of sustained spamming?

That's not theistic based. He spams on a music forum that I visit as well as two different MMO forums. Someone on one of the game forums actually called the number just to see. The guy on the other end kept asking for a credit card before he said he could "help" the caller, but the caller just kept talking and asking question til eventually Baba Ji hung up. :D
Thank you for that, so his motive unsurprisingly is financial gain. My next question is are people really stupid enough to offer him the requested remuneration? Though I think that should probably be rhetorical.

I would love to be able to help with the problem. Unfortunately, I am incredibly computer-illiterate. And about the only thing I know how to do with Spam is fry it and put it on a sandwich with mayo and mustard.
Until the spammer can be stopped automatically, perhaps the answer would be to form a team of spam-scrubbers covering as many time zones as possible. I'm sure there'd be plenty of volunteers among the regulars.

Setting up bots to do this sort of thing is quite easy unfortunately.
There are ways to stop them but they require sacrifices in ease of forum communication and accessibility. Consider them the price of high accessibility.

Do not worry, the bandwidth use is quite minimal. I imagine even 10 years of bots fighting bots on this site would equal about a minute of HD video streaming in total.
Ofcourse the number of connections made by the various bots that ties up the gateway to this site is noticeable.
