Which I don't think should be held against the theists, to be honest. Yes, it gives them a picture to put their flag on when they go marching to their doom, but people like this are going to appear regardless of whether or not they believe in anything. I know it sounds like equivocating, but I genuinely don't think this person stands for any religious ideology, and instead utilized the path of least psychological resistance to enable his lunacy. Now if he were part of a larger group that attacked the Capitol? Then I think there'd be something to look at there. But an outlier, even a violently deranged one, shouldn't be held against the whole.
Except that he is part of a larger group of nutcases.
Did they assault the Capitol or assist them in the attack? (No, moral support doesn't count as an assist). Not being snarky, I legitimately don't know.
If, however, the answer is 'no', then my original statement stands in this situation.
Here's the problem these so-called lone wolf actors that come from highly propagandist ginned up organizations. They are no less responsible than ISIS/ISIL groups that call for acts of violence. They also call for violence, in ways that skirt the law. Inevitably one of their nutcases will act on their preaching and they well know it. Upon such an act they immediately disavow the person.
As any organization would. We can bring to mind a handful of organizations who had members go off the deep end and commit violence, but does it sound reasonable to crack down on them if they don't actively advocate for violence? I know what you're saying about them not obeying the spirit of the law, only the letter, but that's a slippery slope of free speech I'm not comfortable, as someone with a 'radical' view, sliding down. After all, if the religious majority believes that atheists are incapable of moral action and are instead a/immoral at all times, then what reason would they have NOT to crack down on freethinkers?
What group did Dawson supposedly come from?
Who asked to crack down on them? I didn't in the OP. I just denounce them. I call a spade a spade.
This is the organization that dawson belongs to maybe even heads:

Hilariously, I can't even access that site due to the gov't blockers barring it for 'political activism'. I'll check it when I'm on my own.
Dawson is/was the pastor at St .Luke's (baptist) church in Antioch Tennessee. He started running an activist group that is now on the domestic terrorism watch list.
