Ramadan: Feasting, not fasting

Ramadan

“A time of feasting, not a time of fasting”

Ramadan is the time of the year, thirty days to be precise, where muslims claim that they fast from sunrise to sunset. This is done to be pious and follow the rules of their religion - Islam.

But the truth is that muslims buy and eat more food during ramadan than any other time of the year. The reality of these thirty days are as follows:

[1] Eat, eat, wake up and eat some more.

Muslims are not allowed to eat while the sun is up. But they can eat, as much as they want, from sunset to sunrise . . . and boy do they ever!

It is common for muslim families to make a giant breakfast, known as ‘Sehri’ eaten just before the sun rises. Then they prepare an even bigger dinner known as ‘Iftari’ to be consumed after the sun sets.

Keep in mind that eating is permitted after the sun sets, so they can eat as much and for as long as they want. Heck this feasting can go on until the early hours of the morning. They could even eat ‘all night long’.

Muslims also hold these Iftari’s at their homes and invite family and friends and have ‘showing off’ contests as to who can put on the biggest Iftari dinner. It becomes sort of a status symbol for them in their community.

[2] Say hello to diabetes

This behaviour has serious medical consequences:

When a human being starves himself, his body develops hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). The cells inside our bodies need sugar (glucose) to perform basic functions. Without glucose you can’t survive. So the body responds to starvation by producing its own glucose.

How? The liver can produce glucose for the body in states of starvation via a process known as gluconeogenesis.

Then once a muslim breaks his fast and eats a very large meal, he then goes into a state of hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). The human body deals with this by taking this excess sugar from the blood and placing it into our cells.

To do this you need insulin. Insulin comes from the pancreas. Therefore the pancreas has to work overtime to provide the sufficient amount of insulin to place this excess glucose into the cells. This excess of insulin in the blood is known as hyperinsulinemia.

So for the forty days of Ramadan, muslims go through a cycle of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia every day! Their body responds with a cycle of gluconeogenesis and hyperinsulinemia.

The long term effects of this rapid shift from gluconeogenesis to hyperinsulinemia and back again, include damage to the liver and pancreas. The most common consequence is the development of type 2 diabetes. Which can eventually lead to death.

[3] An insult to true fasting

In addition to the above, this bizarre practice of ramadan also causes depression, weight gain, other health problems such as gastro-esophageal reflux disease (acid reflux) and prenatal complications. Syncope causing car accidents and deaths have also been reported.

True fasting is something completely different. True fasting involves cleansing the body with liquids and gradually moving back into a regular diet.

Ramadan is an orgy of food, that is quite frankly an insult to the concept of true fasting. There is nothing 'holy' about this ridiculous nonsense.

I was an Army medic for several years. And whether Hitch is a doctor or not, I can tell you his assessment in regards to the diabetes looks quite sound and accurate.

Edit to add: Whoops. Posted this before reading the post Hitch made about being a Doc. Certainly does explain why his diabetes assessment was so accurate. *chuckle*

Sheldon's Questions You Dodge

  1. If your magic book is inerrant, why is so much effort invested to silence or kill its critics?
  2. Is it ever moral to kill non Muslims?
  3. Is it ever moral for 50+ year old man to have sex with a nine year old child?
  4. What is the penalty for apostasy in Islam?
  5. Do you believe a horse could ever fly?
  6. Do you believe you will get 72 female virgins replenished daily when you die?
  7. What evidence can you demonstrate to support your belief that a deity exists?

@Searching for Truth: it's 30

@Searching for Truth: it's 30 days not 40

Do you think the duration of Ramadan makes any difference to the health effects described by the OP? I'm sure the OP's reference to 40 days was just a typo triggered by familiarity with the Bible. Fasts of that duration appear in the Old and New Testaments. Moses and Jesus are both supposed to have fasted for 40 days. .

The point is that the human authors of neither of these nonsensical, pernicious books knew anything at all about human physiology, which is odd given that they are supposed to have been inspired or dictated by all-knowing sky fairies.

Ramo Mpq's picture
@alegebe,

@alegebe,

This "MD" is unable to distinguish between culture and religious traditions. I've read a few more lines and he's confusing the 2 without knowing the differnce. Basically doing what your average mule would do. Compare Ramadan according to islam then compare it to how it's done in the saudi, Emirati, Indian, Pakistani (or any other) culture.

algebe's picture
@Searching for truth:

@Searching for truth: distinguish between culture and religious traditions

Religions adopt local cultural traditions to capture hearts and minds. When those traditions are criticized, religious leaders claim that they were never really part of the religion, just cultural traditions. Genital mutilation of children is the worst example.

Is that what you mean by distinguishing between culture and religious traditions?

Ramo Mpq's picture
@algebe

@algebe

"Religions adopt local cultural traditions" 100% false when it comes to islam. Can't comment on the other religions. Therefore, your entire post is false as it's built on a false premise. Keep trying though. Don't let facts get in your way, keep making up your false premise and make sure to continue to base your logic of that faulty premise.

algebe's picture
@Searching for truth: 100%

@Searching for truth: 100% false when it comes to islam.

Islam absorbed female genital mutilation, which was a pre-Islamic African tradition. When the practice started to attract international condemnation in the 20th century, suddenly Islamic scholars were distancing Islam from it.

Ramo Mpq's picture
@algebe

@algebe

You got one accurate and credible source to back up your 100% fabricated and brain damaged lie?

So at first you say it's pre Islamic African tradition then you said Islamic scholars distanced themselves from. So when did it become part of islam? Oh yeah I forgot, you build your comments of lies and false premises then reply to yourself based off that brain damaged lie. Got it

algebe's picture
@Searching for truth: So at

@Searching for truth: So at first you say it's pre Islamic African tradition then you said Islamic scholars distanced themselves

In between that I said the Islam absorbed the practice. Rightly or wrongly, it's considered part of Islamic orthodoxy in places like Somalia and Nigeria. Islam doesn't require or condone the practice, but it's tolerated it throughout its history. Today the practice occurs almost exclusively in Muslim countries/communities.

Muslims should be ashamed that they haven't stamped out this vile custom, along with circumcision. Where are all the Fatwahs banning the practice? As far as I know the only one was issued this year by an Imam in Ireland of all places

We in the West should be ashamed that we've allowed Jews to practice their version of infant genital mutilation in our midst right down to the present day.

Ramo Mpq's picture
@Algebe

@Algebe

While I will no longer reply to a brain damaged shameless liar such as yourself. Read below and search for Reza Aslan's comments (or any stats) on genitalia mutiation

"It's a central African problem," Aslan said. "Eritrea has almost 90 percent female genital mutilation. It's a Christian country. Ethiopia has 75 percent female genital mutilation. It's a Christian country. Nowhere else in the Muslim, Muslim-majority states is female genital mutilation an issue."

Your Islamic hate game is weak. Step it up

@Searching for truth: Your Islamic hate game is weak. Step it up

And your apologetics are a fart in the wind. I'm an equal opportunity hater where religions are concerned. They're all diseased growths on the body of mankind. Islam just happens to be the fastest-growing and most dangerous at present.

Read this:
https://www.unicef.org/publications/files/FGM-C_final_10_October.pdf

FGM and support for the continuation of FGM is far higher among Muslims than any other groups in African countries.

And then you have to wonder why countries like the UK, USA, Australia, Norway, New Zealand appear in the FGM statistics. Who's doing it in those countries or sending their daughters overseas to get slashed? I'll give you clue. It's not the Baptists or Methodists. It's not the Mormons or Catholics.

Sky Pilot's picture
Algebe,

Algebe,

A lot of people have a foreskin fetish. They call if freedom of religion.

FGM used to be popular here in the States and the insurance companes covered the cost of the procedre until fairly recently. It was pushed as the thing to do in popular women magazines.

In most foreign countries where it's done the idiot women are the ones behind it forcing their daughters to undergo the procedure on the hoof. And then the daughters force their daughters to have it. It is a classic example of savage physical, emotional, and sexual abuse perpetrated by mostly idiots.

Re: "This "MD" is unable to distinguish between culture and religious traditions."

Uh, okay. So what? True, he may not be exact on the dozens of various practices within the Islam system (from the totally "perfect" Koran, I might add.) And the fact you have to distinguish the various methods of practice among all the different sects should obviously be another indication of just how ridiculous the whole thing is in the first place. No different from all that Christian sects out there that have thousands of different practices all "originating" from the exact same book. Be that as it may, it does not matter in the slightest, because everything Hitch said about the potential diabetes problems associated with the eating habits during Ramadan are absolutely spot on. Whether it is thirty days or forty days does not matter in the slightest. Sooooooo........ *shrugging shoulders*...

Sky Pilot's picture
Searching for truth,

Searching for truth,

Maybe he got the number of days mixed up with the fasting times that Moses and Yeshua did. Moses was always fasting for forty days and nights without food or water. Yeshua did at least one forty day fast withot food and water. He never did specify how many days a person has to fast. I do it every day for eight to 12 hours when I sleep.

When you get sick do you drink the camel milk and camel urine cocktail that Mohammed specified? If you don't then why get upset over the error in the number of days the OP made?

Thanks for continuing to show your pure ignorance on islam. In islam it specifically says that Ramadan is either 29 or 30 and will NOT exceed 30 days. I would blame your ignorance on your anti theism but, you are a monkey afterall so no use of arguing with a monkey

Sorry! My monkey brain assumed you were the one citing 40 days...... One point awarded to SFT. Ha ha ha ha ,..... It won't be long before you lose it though.

LOL.

LOL.

Ramadan is midnight snacking on a biblical scale. Heavy eating before sleeping is a great way to get constipation, and we all know you can't have a real religious experience unless you're full of shit. So binge eating in the dark seems like a great way to get closer to god.
