Shinto doesn't get much mileage here, so here's something completely different.
This story is about a double murder and suicide at a 400-year-old Shinto Shrine in Tokyo. Before WW2 Shinto was a powerful state religion worshiping the Emperor and Japan. Japan was the first place created by the gods, and the Emperor was descended directly from the Sun goddess. That made the Japanese master race of Asia. Shinto was enforced on people in conquered territories, such as Korea and Taiwan.
These days Shinto is usually a peaceful and profitable religion. They name children, run festivals, bless building sites, and sell good luck charms. The Buddhists handle funerals, and the Christians do a lot of weddings.
This particular shrine is one of the biggest and best known. It's also a family-owned business, and the murders resulted from an inheritance dispute between the son and daughter of the previous high priest. So much for religious enlightenment.

LOL! I always love it when these peaceful Eastern religions turn ugly. Quite a few years back one of the Buddhist leaders here in Korea passed away. Two groups of Buddhists believed that their guy should be in charge of all the Buddhists. It made great TV. One guy set himself on fire, another held a knife to his throat and threatened to kill himself on national TV. Cops were heading up the fire escape to get this guy when it tore away from the building and about 15 cops with batons and shields did body plants into the ground. It was an exciting time.
Shame on you cognostic! Nothing funny about people setting themselves on fire. Have a little pity!
chimp3,
Burning yourself alive is a great way to reduce your fear of hell.
