I do wonder if there are more

I do wonder if there are more than one way to be deterministic. There is the predictive side, in which things are "pre-determined" which is what I tried to argue when I was being poetic, aka the blueprint.

But then there seems to be a different type of determinism, which would require that everything have a cause, but not a predictable result. This aligns more with my notion of randomness and free will. They may not be predictable, maybe even as you suggested with identical starting points, but they still have a cause.

It's the inescapable notion of a cause that makes the universe deterministic, but perhaps not predictable.

John 6IX Breezy - Ok but how

John 6IX Breezy - Ok but how do you make sure you have identical initial states and environments?

One way is to test the objects to see if they exhibit the Bose-Einstein distribution. If they do, they are identical.
---------------------------------------------------

John 6IX Breezy - I can take a random sample from a population, and their scores will fall into a normal distribution more or less.

You are discussing gross macroscopic properties of objects that contain something on the other of 10^23 particles. With that many parts you are doing a lot of averaging an when you average 10^23 data points the average value converges on the expected value; resulting in a world view that looks deterministic.
-----------------------------------

John 6IX Breezy - Even at the atomic level the probability distribution of electrons produce orbitals, with logical shapes.

Captured electron (and electrons in general) do not have the well defined paths/shapes you attributed to them. Those ideas are used in chemistry because they are a useful fiction.
-------------------------------------

John 6IX Breezy - It would be like an electron becoming an elephant, then going back to an electron, only to become a proton.

You are right! But not in the way you probably expected:

There is a non-zero probability for any system to tunnel (think transform) into any other system so long as both systems have the same conserved quantities. To rephrase: there is a non-zero probability for an electron to transform into an elephant (plus extra material for conservation purposes).

Brilliant, I must learn the art of brevity. You could also point out that child cancers exist, one assumes this is another part of the same blueprint? "Thank you god"...

The term "forever" is most commonly used to denote a very long period of time. And while it is true that forever can be as long as countless eons, it can also be as brief as the tiniest fraction of a second.

There are two for me....

There are two for me....

First, the sheer scale of the known universe. It's basically beyond anything we can even begin to imagine in our minds. Just trying to comprehend the distances of things in our galactic neighborhood is large enough, but then scaling to distances between galaxies is worse. Makes me feel both humble and proud at the same time.

Second is time. About a decade ago I was trying to learn what 'relativity' meant to time, because prior to that I had no clue what was involved. Finally some videos on YouTube (I have no idea who it was now, but I think Phil Plaitt was involved along the way) explained it enough that I had a"light bulb" moment. Once I understood the basic concept, I knew what scientists meant when they said "Sometimes science fact is stranger than science fiction."

@Lock Re: Scale

@Lost Re: Scale

Yeah, the true size of the universe absolutely boggles the mind. And going from one extreme to the other, it is equally difficult (for me, at least) to imagine the size of an atom and it's individual parts. We live in a magnificent and wondrous world, and despite how advanced we may think we are, mankind has yet to even scratch the surface of understanding all there is to know about it. Anybody who ever dares claim to know the true meaning and cause of our existence is a fool and should be treated accordingly. Meanwhile, let's just try to have fun while we can, folks, even as we continue to search for answers.

By the way, Lost, I'm digging the new profile pic. Gnarly.

The most beautiful in my eyes

The most beautiful in my eyes as I look around the world is that people love, That there is a thirst to love more then there is to hate. to do good to live lives of virtue. To assist ones fellowman. Isn`t that what its all about. Where all related to one another so we should put away the friction and hate and bad feelings and learn to love better. To make this thing and mystery we call life work .why don`t you join me in being a forgiver and lover of humanity.

@Agnostic believer: "why don`t you join me in being a forgiver and lover of humanity."

I already am. Obsession with the differences between us and them, the insiders and the outsiders, is a legacy of religion, not atheism/humanism.

Oh the protestants hate the catholics
And the catholics hate the protestants
And the hindus hate the muslims
And everybody hates the jews (Tom Lehrer, "National Brotherhood Week")

your so right Algebe

your so right Algebe unfortunately there has been a lot of trouble with religious practice I grew up when the catholics and the protestants were fighting and maiming and killing one another, But as that turned out there was a peace treaty done they arrived at a peaceful settlement. I am a former catholic never hated anyone that is not in my vocabulary Algebe, like I always posted here and elsewhere I'm all for reconciliation through love and forgiveness. Those people from all walks of life who go about parodying hate speech have no place in my life. I will not tolerate it in front of me or anywhere else Algebe.

@Agnostic Believer: "unfortunately there has been a lot of trouble with religious practice"

It's not just the practice. It's fundamental aspects of religion that cause all the pain and death.

First, religions are mostly based on gods. Those fictional gods are supposedly offended by people who don't believe in them. People who offend god deserve to die or must be forced to believe. Whole countries have gone to war over that.
Second, religions mostly offer some kind of reward after death in paradise. Only followers of the religion can get in. Everyone else will burn in hell. Why not start the burning a little earlier?
Third, religions are based on fear, and that fear is burned into the formative minds of little children.

Hia ALGEBE I find what you

Hia ALGEBE I find what you have said really informative, the fundamental aspects of religion I agree with you are flawed .i think people take the god belief to seriously. That`s why you see me vacillate back and forth on these forums, Some times I agree with certain types of belief and some times I'm at odds with such beliefs. I really am sad to hear that countries have gone to was over religion also that people are forced to believe, I always have had a problem with the hell doctrine being parody about around the globe. I would never espouse putting any kind of fear or hatred in little children. that is not my type of religion algebe. When I see that being carried out I turn off completely and turn agnostic.
