Blasphemy laws are a species of law that seek to protect the perceived integrity of imagined gods, by infringing upon the rights of real human beings. Blasphemy laws are hangovers from a darker age and they are enjoying somewhat of a renaissance in recent times. The Saudi Arabian blogger, Raif Badawi, is presently serving time in prison for blasphemy and in Pakistan, following their protesting of the illegal detention of one of their colleagues, 68 lawyers have been charged with blasphemy, an offence that carries the death penalty. At present there are 13 countries around the world that issue the death penalty for atheism and many others that, by way of this capricious species of law, imprison atheists for being, well, sane.
