I would say Smith was

I would say Smith was disproven beyond a shadow of a doubt as soon as he mistranslated an entire Egyptian scroll before anyone in America could translate Egyptian adding the mistranslation to his works of doctrine to the church. Shortly after this we could read Egyptian and the story of the Mormon faith should have ended there but that is not how people act when they go all in, theyll go double or nothing if they got nothing to lose.

"Nagging questions such as these are addressed at the heart of the book of mormon with unusual rites such as baptism for the dead,"

Baptizing people for the dead was one of the original Christian rituals. It was very popular during ancient times.

Yes but that was only for people that you knew like your newborn infant who got hit by a runaway chariot or something.

The mormons however, took it to a whole new level with entire research teams digging through every death certificate they can find. When they find yours, they'll ceremonially baptise you too.

According to the fairy tale in 1 Corinthians 15:29 =

(NCV) = If the dead are never raised, what will people do who are being baptized for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people being baptized for them?

(CEV) = If the dead are not going to be raised to life, what will people do who are being baptized for them? Why are they being baptized for those dead people?

(NLT) = If the dead will not be raised, what point is there in people being baptized for those who are dead? Why do it unless the dead will someday rise again?

(ESV) = Otherwise, what do people mean by being baptized on behalf of the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized on their behalf?

(CEB) = Otherwise, what are those who are getting baptized for the dead doing? If the dead aren’t raised, then why are they being baptized for them?

Being baptized for dead people was part of the original Christian ritual. It went out of favor when the part about the person having to believe before he was baptized was added.

Some Bible revisions omit Acts 8:37 so that they can baptize babies. https://www.biblegateway.com/verse/en/Acts%208:37

Acts 8:37 (WE) = "Philip answered, `If you believe with all your heart, you may be baptised.' The man said, `I do believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.'"
