@Sheldon: noise pollution can be deeply pernicious

Japan had a series of "piano murders." Piano noise travels a long way and can't be shut out, especially in a dense city like Tokyo. I had a few fights over pianos, saxophones, dogs, etc., when I lived there. Some people are just arseholes.

In work during my breaks I like to read, so I never go near the canteen. One of my pet peeves is people who turn on their mobiles to listen to either music or a YouTube clip AT FULL VOLUME and without earphones. Why don't they even consider that others might not enjoy what they are listening to?

Exactly. "White noise" doesn't bother me. I have lived on aircraft carriers and the noise from the jets never bothered me.

I really have a hard time

I really have a hard time with loud noise pollution.

I too, as I aged, learned the wisdom of not simply getting in a fight with anyone looking for one. Instead I make use of the criminal justice system that I help pay for.

Pretty spectacularly stupid on the workers part to have loud music and look for a fight if they knew they could get deported if they caught notice of the law. If I was working the site and faced possible deportation if found by the law, I would've left the work place as soon as the combative guy working there turned the music back up.
