Of course this is spot on, but my post and thread was aimed at creating an epiphany from them, rather than affirmation from someone who is already aware of the nature of their delusion.
I was poking the bear basically, but not just for the sake of a reaction, you never know when delusion might suddenly be drawn sharply into focus, by some pointed questions.
Hello folks,
This question has been asked many times and has been answered just as much. Let's take creek mythology gods etc, which we know are myths, we now have supernatural Gods are they myths too. To answer this we would have to know the origin of religious beliefs which to our knowledge goes as far back as 30.000 b.c.e from indigenous accounts and beliefs not just from word of mouth that's been handed down through countless generations but from ancient art work such as rock paintings etc. Obviously we can't pin point the origin of religious beliefs but the consensus is surprisingly simple.
Humans have found themselves in a orderly well constructed and stable environment ie universe and have spiritual experiences that explain this, over time there is progression in religion to what we have today. Even religion evolves, the problem is we cannot prove the origin of religious beliefs, if you could you will have your answer to your OP, was this a result of this supernatural force or was it invented by cunning men to control the masses, you decide.
If humans created fictional dieties how do we know they're fictional? I'll have to try an analogy for this. Dawkins teapot springs to mind, a teapot is orbiting the earth because you say it is and believe it but you cannot prove it to me because of absence of evidence but yet you still believe, similarly with dieties and religious beliefs. However the flaw with Dawkins teapot is not the absence of evidence that there is a teapot, it's the presence of evidence that NASA has never launched a piece of china into orbit or aliens put it there. The difference between the teapot or batman, spaghetti monsters etc and gods couldn't be more apart. Historical testimonials, timeframes endless religious doctrines, ancient evidences of gods, humans willing to fight tooth and nail for their beliefs, is the difference between fictional characters and dieties. Whether you take this as the presence of evidence or lack there of, this is the best physical evidence that religion can give you but whether you dismiss this evidence is irrelevant, for us to prove that gods are fictional, humanity would have to prove the origin of religious beliefs. From a theist view it was God, from a atheist view it was invented which puts both back to square one because neither can physically prove it.
Thank you
Jason, you wrote, “... from a atheist view it was invented...”
Not really. As someone who is identified as atheist, all I’m saying is that I don’t believe anyone’s assertion that god(s) exist.
Additionally, the origins of some religions can indeed be proven.
@Jason74
How do you know that NASA and aliens have never launched a piece of china into orbit? And why do you assume that Russell's teapot must be manmade, when Russell was making an analogy with dogma about divinities etc.?
How do you know that NASA and aliens have never created deities? If there is no evidence that NASA and aliens created Zeus, then that must mean Zeus is true, is that correct?
Something does not become more true because a person is willing to blow themselves up over it.
I think you have rather missed the point. If you accept humans have created fictional deities, then what objective evidence singles out the one you have chosen over all the others? If you have none, then your belief in it is demonstrably arbitrary and subjective, the same as all the others.
So what objective evidence can you demonstrate for any deity?
