Each psyche envisions the god it conjures up differently than the next, because there has never been revelation to focus it on a common reference, giving us no choice but to define this collection of varying mental images as polytheism. They are distinct from each other because no two people live in the same imagination, though they may well object to this perspective loud, long and often, and in this regard the whole of monotheism itself is stripped of its plausibility. And, as chimp3 points out, each visit to the god-thought will find it reformed with each passing day, event and life experience all working together to refit the psyche with new perspectives in it's constant state of flux.
