The second movement (Adagio non troppo) of Mozart's Oboe Concerto in C major, K. 314.

It starts at 6m50s here.

This piece of music will expand your mind and add 20 points to your IQ.

And then there's this. One of the best putdowns of religious idolatry ever, with some amazing music by The Who.

In fact I love the whole "Tommy" opera, with songs by the Who, Elton John, and Tina Turner.

Ah! The Who. This is one of the first albums I ever bought. My poor mother used to get off the bus at the end of our street, late afternoon after work, and cringe at the wall of sound coming from our house. Usually this song:

(She still tells me to turn my music down. And/or whinges if I don't hear what she says because I've got earphones in. I can't win.)

Oh. My. God. They've got a version of Big Rock Candy Mountain and I just know they left the last verse in. Thanks for the introduction , Cog. I'm lovin the Beat Farmers already.

I listen to great or interesting vocalists...makes no difference to me what genre. However, I think the finest piece of music ever written is the second movement of Beethoven’s ninth symphony.

I'll take the second and the fourth. The fourth makes me cry, especially live.

I agree, sushi, both the 2nd and the 4th! The choral, done well, is breathtaking!

The first time I heard it

The first time I heard it live, when it ended there was that moment of total silence in the audience, then the audible indrawn breath, then the cries and applause and sound of hundreds of people getting to their feet: that good. Unforgettable.

I've never had the privilege of hearing it performed that way again. I can't even find a recording that comes close . Most conductors make it grand, profound and a little stately. This night, the 9th skipped- the whole thing, not just the scherzo. It really was an Ode to Joy. You'd have loved it, Cyber.

Ah...I’m sure I would have loved it! Am quite envious of that experience. Sounds like it hit you at a cellular level :-)

One of the best paintings I’ve ever done was a portrait of Beethoven. Did it with a knife (no brushes, tons of paint, black & white only) while listening to those two movements on headphones at a quite dangerous volume.

I'd love to see the painting- and to have watched you paint it.

Hey, Term-dog, all that heavy metal is okay, I suppose. However, this is what REAL men listen to. One of my personal favorites. *grin*

Oh, and for the sake of a little background, that second song I posted always reminds me of my very first kiss. Summer. 1982. Fantastic time to be a kid. Ahhhh.... I remember it well....

I was a little too tall, could've used a few pounds. Tight pants, points, hardly reknown. She was a black haired beauty with deep dark eyes. With points all her own slung way up high.... (Hmmm... Ya know, somebody should write a song about that. *scratching chin*) Anyway...

Yes, those were the good ol' days....*far away misty-eyed stare*.... Incidentally, it also happened to be the summer for my first time going to the beach. It was only for about three days or so, but by the time I returned home my first-kiss sweetheart had already been lured away by a rival competitor. Alas, my first true heartbreak as well. It was quite the eventful summer.

The all time classic

The all time classic religious song. If you have not heard this - you have to give it a listen just once. Damn - I don't think I can post this one in the hub. I gotta go read the rules again.

Okay, "Like minded Atheists" I think I just might get away with it. After all, You Tube has not banned it. I just might be pushing the boarder a bit but I think it will fly. http://deturl.com/play.asp?v=oWqMaTYRcCA

So wrong. Just...so wrong. "I don't cuss, I don't blaspheme..." , followed by...well, you know what it's followed by. Wow. I think I'm still too stunned to laugh. Wow.

Edit: I just played it for my mother. She was half asleep, but as soon as that word was said, her eyes flew open and she stared at me in disbelief.

Grrr! This is what happens when you spend 3 decades living in a small town in regional Far North Queensland. You miss out on the choice bands getting around, doing gigs.

To Do List
1. Move closer to son in Gympie and drag him to gigs.
