Sex and God: How Religion Distorts Sexuality – Darrel Ray |
Why are the most popular religions in the world obsessed about sex? What is it that makes sex so important, whether Islam or Christianity, Buddhism or Mormonism? How does religion affect human sexuality? Darrel Ray’s Sex and God tries to answer these questions and many more. This book, which ventures into areas that have been left undiscovered for centuries, will stun you with how greatly religion influences your sexuality, who you choose to marry, how you approach your sex life and many other facets of your complex personality.
From the first page itself, the book flows naturally with Ray’s words hitting you like the concerned voice of a dear friend, explaining to you what ideally your parents should have when they sat you down for the “big talk.” Sex and God systematically unravels the perils of religious programming as far as sex is concerned and it guides you towards achieving freedom from those sexual shackles, so you can live a healthy sex life that is free from any kind of religious sanction.
Each of the chapters in this book meanders through the problems of religious influence on sexuality – from shaming us, restricting our pleasure and controlling us to forming unhealthy relationships with ourselves as well as those around us. An interesting point this book makes is how religion influences the sex lives of even those people who consider themselves secular.
While the candid title and bold cover of this book is bound to entertain you, the content of the book is likely to help you start your journey towards a healthy, meaningful and secular sex life. With over 30 years in the field of psychology and multiple degrees in sociology, religion and anthropology, Ray effortlessly proves his holistic understanding of human sexuality in his book titled Sex and God.

Get this one. Its useful if you have or are around 20 something yr old kids.
I have been talking to some christians on a christian chat site and one of the most common things I hear is kids 13-25 struggling with sexuality. Hating themselves for masturbating and having sexual desires. And for most the bad feelings drive them to do it so much that it becomes an obsession and totally screws them up. I really hate the way religion supresses sexuality to the point of it blowing up destructively for so many people.
"blowing up destructively"
Dam that sounded naughty :P
But yea ex-christian_atheist, you are right, Christianity does suppress sexuality. It tries to go against nature and in doing so it results in some of the worst things, like child rape, etc..
