Growing up, I thought God was shorthand for I don't really understand how the world was made. Or at the very least I don't really feel like telling you why you should or shouldn't do something "God said to"or "God said not to". By this virtue would God not be closely related to lack of understanding then?
No one in my house growing up ever tried to cop out of an answer, I'm at least thankful for that much. But thinking of God as "the great unknown" isn't really that esoteric for most people. Anthropomorphizing a big unanswerable question into a giant man in the sky is a little juvenile for society as it stands now, though.
I really do feel that the concept of God is a scapegoat for people to not take responsibility in learning, researching and investigating. Sometimes I will bring up geologic topics to my grandma and she will quickly mutter "I don't know anything about that" with distaste and not pursue the conversation further. I am appalled she has such a lack of interest in science. I know she's my grandma but... Is it like this across the board for religious folk?
Nope not like that across the board for religious folks, but sadly it is smeared that way across much of the board.
