Primate is not a species.
Primate is also not plural. Thus not the subject of my sentence. Turn it into plural, and the subject magically becomes the individual species that make it up.
Me: Toyotas are good cars.
You: Toyota isn't a car.
OK, sure: primates aren't a species either.
Just for the petty sake of proving my point: What are primates?
