It is not news that many

It is not news that many Republicans conflicted. A couple of snippets...

Saw a bumper sticker in Metro Atlanta today:
"If you love America, the worst Republican is better than the best Democrat."

Yesterday, my very conservative, very religious, Republican brother-in-law said that, “If it came down to Trump and Hilary, I would have to vote for her.”

"Strange days indeed" (J. Lennon).

As far as geopolitics go?

As far as geopolitics go? Cruz is at least consistent with this views. I'm admittedly a Sanders supporter, but I can grant that to Cruz. Trump has no set political positions of any kind. He's the International House of Waffles politically, except he brought a competition yodeling team to do people's taxes instead of eat.

The same goes for his religious stance. Cruz is consistent, Trump is not. The problem is that I would rather have someone who's inconsistent on this matter as opposed to someone who has stated in no uncertain terms that he would create an American Christian caliphate were he to be given the reigns. It's troubling when people say that he's 'ordained by God' to win. Don't get me wrong, I'm quite sure Drumpf will sweep the primaries, but frankly that's a good thing.

You don't spell it out, so I'll ask: Does that mean that you would prefer Trump over Ted Cruz?
Even though I didn't show that clearly in the examples, that have more or less become my stance.

Trump is basically a clownish sociopath with a nack for callous business. I don't think he is the least bit interested in keeping his "promises" to Christians (or anyone else for that matter) unless it's in his own best interest. He is a self serving jackass, but probably not more so than George Bush. The biggest difference between them is that instead of being embarrassed of being a buffoon, like Bush was, Trump tries to celebrate it and use it.

Cruz on the other hand is a pathologically self righteous and delusional fundamentalist Christian (and probably also a sociopath), who will cater to the fanatic Christians first, and secondly to the rich and unscrupulous businessmen who is funding his campaign. This means that he will do the same stupid decisions as Trump, but also prioritize reversing the separation of Church and state, undermining education with creationism and basically try to create a "Christian caliphate" as you put it.

My guess is that it's better to have the self serving psychopath Drumpf [1] as president, than the wannabe messiah Cruz. (That said, it's better to have Hillary Clinton and better yet Bernie).

Note: I'm not an American, I live in Scandinavia.
So why do I give a crap?
Because the U.S. is the most influential country on the planet at this time. It probably has the most powerful war machine to deploy and is also very influential in terms of economy, scientific discoveries and progress (not to mention the movie industry), while simultaneously having a level of religious and superstitious belief that is uncharacteristic of such a developed country.
Put Ted Cruz (or for that matter any of the other religious nutcases) in charge and you have a very scary combo...

May I offer a veiw from

May I offer a view from Europe? (I can't vote but it will effect me too! :-)

Trump says he's going to "make America (i.e. the USA) great" (i,e, dominant? richer? Does anyone know what he means?)
As a Brit, my impression is that the USA and Trump would have less western support than a Democrat as our politicians may find it very difficult to cooperate with him. I hope he wins the Rep nomination as I think that either Hilary or Sanders will beat him. I still have faith in the common sense of USAmericans en masse.

Trump looks from here like a protest vote. Many US voters (and not only Reps) seem to think the establishment aren't listening to them. Fareed Zakaria and others have suggested that Romney's speech was aimed at the wrong people (establishment supporters) rather than those who feel their views aren't being represented. The stalemate and lack of cooperation in Congress isn't helping either.

Viewed from here, Obama will be a very hard act to follow, (he is still extremely popular here, though USAmericans seem to have gained the impression he is much less popular than he was). At least a Democrat will be compatible with conservative and liberal views over here. Trump and Cruz look like a rather looney fringe.

Best of luck with your elections anyway - for all our sakes.

Thanks ZeffD for the view

Thanks ZeffD for the view from Europe {The Birth Place of Liberalism}. "Making America Great Again" is a propaganda tool that is very successful in political campaigns here. It does not require much reasoning to peel the skin from that argument. Ask any conservative who yells that slogan in what year America was great and you have them pinned. People like Cruz will usually say "the years before they outlawed prayer in public schools". OK , not counting the First Amendment that means 1962. Any person with a minimal historical perspective on social justice should be able to state a thousand reasons why going back to 1962 is not a good idea. Trump would probably name the year ......Oh , never mind . Who the hell knows what Trump would say.

The weird thing is that

The weird thing is that history seems to have no value what so ever to the "average" American. As if the entire Christian community in the U.S. has no memory past 6 months. Trump can just claim to "never have said that", even though it's in his personal Twitter feed 2 years back. There are no consequences for such outright lying, it's only what he says right now that matters.

So it's no wonder that real history, like the true ideals of the founding fathers of the U.S., isn't even on the map for the gullible majority.

Damn, that sounds really ominous and gloomy...

The only time America was

The only time America was great was before the Europeans invaded it.
