Street preaching should be categorised as public harassment

Street preaching is when a group of biased, verbally confrontive, religious, bigots are given free reign to harass pedestrians with threats of Unending torture in hell for not agreeing with them, throwing insults like “god hates fags” to Homosexuals, attempt to spread psychological fear, and accuse people who do not share their beliefs of being liars and horrible people doomed to burn for eternity! This form of psychological attack on strangers, who have enough to deal with already, is unacceptable and we as people have to say: that‘s enough. We’re far more civilised than barbarians of the past and shouting monkeys of the forest. The Church has a building with walls for a reason. If we the people are not attending their bigoted insult of a service, then they should have no right nor respectable reason to bring it to me and shout it at passers by.

https://www.change.org/p/u-s-house-of-representatives-criminalise-street...

I propose we sign this petition to get it addressed, at least if we do, people will think twice. I’ve had my little sister and my mother scared and scarred due to this exact type of quackery and madness! I scared me when I was a believer and it is a psychological fear tactic. Spreading fear to force people to your side and it is unacceptable.

I once saw a group of

I once saw a group of Christians, led by a preacher, standing across the road from a bank (Lloyd's Bank... a British bank). The preacher was calling out over a microphone: "Praise the Lloyd" ... "Praise the Lloyd".

Oh dear. I've done at least

Oh dear. I've done at least six of the things on that wanker's sandwich board, so I'm going straight to hell. But at least I won't have to spend eternity in the company of megaphone-powered morons like that jelly-belly Jesus freak.

I read the first three,

I read the first three, drunkards, fornicators, and masturbators, and realised immediately I'd done all three simultaneously.

So ok I'm orf to hell, but surely I should get a prize of some sort. Though to be fair wanking myself and someone else off during sex, whilst drunk may have been the prize now I think about it.

That list is too easy, we should see how many things on the list we've done at the same time? I've got 3 easily with just a cursory glance.

I can feel a new bucket list forming.

I've done at least 7 things

I've done at least 7 things on that list. So well be in Hell together.

I've done at least ten on

I've done at least ten on that board, with another one or two possibles. Does that mean I get to be first in line? Oh, and we really should work out who will bring what as far as snacks and drinks. See you all at the barbeque!

There's only 13 on the board.

There's only 13 on the board. If you've done at least 10, and maybe 1 or 2 others, that pretty much adds up to all of them.

You are therefore the first tin witch I've known and the only male to get an abortion. Congrats on both of those.

It's good to know I will have someone to hide behind, and no, that is not a sodomy reference as there is not enough lube in the world.

Sheldon's picture
Ok I'm actually up to9 now

Ok I'm actually up to9 now pretty much all at once. I'm not going to have an abortion or cheat on the wife, and whilst i make no judgements sodomy doesn't appeal to me or the missus.

I think I'm stuck at 9...anyone manage to combine more than 9 simultaneously?

@ Lenny: I gotta disagree.

@ Lenny: I gotta disagree.
Standing on a public sidewalk, not interfering with the public's ability to walk by and not blocking any doors or pathways, street preaching is and should always remain COMPLETELY LEGAL. This is a basic freedom in a free country. This is protected by the first amendment and the Government should never be allowed to interfere with this speech.

As far as being verbally confrontational - there is a classification of speech called "Hate Speech" or "Speech to incite violence" and this is already illegal and not allowed. There was a court case in Canada where the bible was actually held to the legal standard of hate speech. The preachers were openly condemning homosexuals. The court found them guilty of hate speech. (I COULD NOT AGREE MORE.) I have heard street preachers call women whores. This is obviously inciting violence. Direct insults at people passing by should be looked at. At the same time, I fully agree with a persons right to call a police officer a fucktard. (But never in the performance of his duty.) He does not need the interruption when writing a ticket or dealing with a shoplifter etc... ) I personally do not think street preachers should be calling people sinners. Its the same as calling them criminals, scumbags, etc... but this word unfortunately, when it comes from a loving god, is allowed. In short - not all speech is allowed. Street Preachers are not allowed to incite violence and I believe they actually do that at times. You are certainly allowed to take offense whether or not they are offensive. With all that said, I would rather err on the side of freedom than interfere with the first amendment and give the government more power over our lives.

US LAWS are among the most liberal in the world - "First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.[8] There are several categories of speech that not protected by the First Amendment, such as speech that calls for imminent violence upon a person or group. However, the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that hate speech is not one of these categories.[89][not in citation given] Court rulings often must be reexamined to ensure the U.S. Constitution is being upheld in the ruling on whether or not the words count as a violation.[90]" (Wikipedia)

There are other conditions on speech. Many cities do not allow the use of megaphones. In some cases I agree with this. It depends, imo, on the background noise. At a public fair ground with all the people screaming and games and rides, I have no problem with it. In front of a business on a city street, problem. In a public parking lot, no problem.

There are plenty of restrictions on Public Speaking./ Banning street preaching is not a good idea. Banning certain words is a great idea. For pushing the idea of a loving god, they can be fucktard assholes at times. On that, we are in complete agreement.

Sheldon's picture
I'm inclined to agree, there

I'm inclined to agree, there have always been and must always be consequences for how people choose to exercise their right to free expression and speech, but everyone must still have that right in any truly free society.

Freedom of speech needs protected for everyone. If you don't like what is being said, then walk on down the street.

I'm so glad y'all see that. I don't like or agree with the extreme feminist/pro choice protests for example, but I want them to have the right to do it as long as they rnt getting in the way of peoples lives or putting anyone in danger etc

Yes. Christianity, like Islam, has such a long and illustrious history of tolerance toward dissenters and non-believers, doesn't it.

Ouch! I love that, and of course it presents the perfect opportunity to quote the Hitch again.

“Many religions now come before us with ingratiating smirks and outspread hands, like an unctuous merchant in a bazaar. They offer consolation and solidarity and uplift, competing as they do in a marketplace. But we have a right to remember how barbarically they behaved when they were strong and were making an offer that people could not refuse.”

I need to become a witch and

I need to become a witch and starting preforming abortions so I can get all the checkmarks.

That is an outstanding

That is an outstanding picture. I appreciate the contrast of the "going to hell" sign and the "Jesus is Love" shirt. Gotta love the dude's complete ignorance and inability to grasp the irony.

BTW, I'm at 10, not simultaneously though and since I've not had an abortion, am not a witch and am faithful to my wife, you can infer the others. I'm most proud of being a "reveler".

I absolutely agree that hate

I absolutely agree that hate speech and intimidation should be banned.

I also resent being tarred with the same brush as hypocrites.

There r already laws in place for that so its kind of a non issue

If I sodomise a witch, and

If I sodomise a witch, and she has an abortion, then I've done it all, as long as you count adultery as sex outside of marriage, rather than cheating on your spouse whilst married.

I should get a set of steak knives then. It'd be great to walk up that guy in the photo with a piece of chalk and tick each one on his list I have done.

Nyarlathotep's picture
I suggest this to people who

I suggest this to people who want to increase their score; oral sex is sodomy.

@Nyarlathotep: oral sex is

@Nyarlathotep: oral sex is sodomy.

I didn't know that. I just looked it up and found that sodomy is any kind of non-procreative sex. I'd love to be present in a church when the preacher/priest explained that to his flock just to observe the expressions on people's faces.

So strictly speaking he should have put "Buggery" on his sign rather than "Sodomy".

I also support free speech,

I also support free speech, but I think it's reasonable for communities to set rules about obstruction, harassment, and noise in public places. Interference with business should also be grounds for moving the loons on. Having one of these cretins yammering or singing outside a shop can really drive away customers.

It would also be helpful to set aside a specific area for public debate and preaching, etc. An example of that is Speakers' Corner in London's Hyde Park.

Nyarlathotep's picture
Another tip for getting more

Another tip for getting more check marks: an adulterer is anyone who has sex outside of marriage.

Ahhh FUCK! I wanted to be

Ahhh FUCK! I wanted to be number one on the list so I went to the doctor and told him I needed an abortion. The asshole had the balls to tell me I couldn't have one. So I bribed him with three times the cost. He told me I didn't have a woomb. (Whatever the fuck that is.) I told him that if he did not give me the abortion I would burn his office down. Well.... making a long story short..... I am now number one in the forums. I have done them all, and I have a scar on my chest and a missing lung to prove it.

xenoview's picture
Wow! After reading the other

Wow! After reading the other post, I can say I've done 12 of them, the only one I didn't do was have an abortion.

Tin-Man's picture
Hell, with the new info I am

Hell, with the new info I am also at twelve! Yay!!! The abortion is the only uncertainty. So, with that in mind (and not wanting to go to the extreme that Cog did), do you think it would count if a person is pro-choice? As far as I'm concerned, it is the woman's body and she should be free to do as she pleases with it. I would even defend her right to do so. Does that count as being an abortionist?.... *fingers crossed*....

Tin-Man: The abortion is the only uncertainty.

You don't have to have an abortion. You can perform one.

My friend performed an abortion on a cat once. He saw it crapping in his garden, so he shot it with a BB gun. The cat got such a fright it had a miscarriage. He got arrested. I'm pretty sure he'll go to hell.

Hey! I used to squeeze baby

Hey! I used to squeeze baby fish out of mommy fish and use them for bait! DANM! I gave up a lung for nothing!!! I wonder if they can put it back? I have to smoke twice as many cigarettes to get a buzz now.
