It's a dark day in the scientific community as we mourn the loss of a great scientist.

Aw, man.... Damn. A most fond farewell to a most incredibly brilliant mind. He will be missed.
A brief history of time was probably the first science book I ever read. I bought it at a thrift shop for $3 a few years back. Later on I stumbled upon a random book while skipping class at my school's library, by Oliver Sacks. Hawkins is the reason I went into science, and Sacks the reason I chose psychology/neuroscience.
Both are gone.
Aww bugger.
One of the great minds. I'm choked.
A great loss to humanity!
I remember finding a Brief History of Time incredibly difficult to read as a teenager, but after Einstein, he was essentially the archetypal figure of the scientist to all. The guy had a great sense of humor too:

I loved his computer-synthesized voice. It was the sound of science. His achievements were amazing. He had a great mind, but the most impressive thing about his was the strength of character that allowed him to accomplish so much after being given two years to live in 1963.
Anyone remember seeing him on Star Trek?
Stephen Hawking: 'There is no heaven; it's a fairy story'
"The belief that heaven or an afterlife awaits us is a "fairy story" for people afraid of death, Stephen Hawking has said.
In a dismissal that underlines his firm rejection of religious comforts, Britain's most eminent scientist said there was nothing beyond the moment when the brain flickers for the final time."
A class act who lived 55 years after doctors told him he had 2 years left at the most.
Next time someone suggests humans need the crutch of superstition you could do no better than citing Stephen Hawking.
Well Britain`s scientist was ignorant and arrogant here during his life time How even though with his high knowledge makes a statement like what you cited above is one of arrogance and ignorance .and that is the very reason why we need God is because according to him and atheist this is all there is. This life and then death. I of course don`t accept that polemic Christianity offers us a continuous life after this death. There is hope, And only Christianity offers that premise. .
Stephen Hawking was a genius to rival Einstein, you Billy still can't abbreviate you are.
So your latest attempt at trolling is another irony overload.
"according to him and atheist this is all there is."
He never claimed that. Your execrable grasp of English seems to be letting you down again Billy.
Christianity like all religions offer naught but wishful thinking and delusion for the fearful and the gullible.
@faith in God: Christianity offers us a continuous life after this death.
Yeah. That's the bait that Christianity uses to suck people into its black hole of ignorance and lies. Your death cult has blinded you to the magnificence of a great mind and a life lived well.
An ordinary person afflicted with motor neuron disease might have shriveled into the futility of prayer and pilgrimages to Lourdes. Hawking rose above it and went on to push back the horizons of knowledge. In the process he dramatically narrowed down the gaps where your ever-shrinking god can lurk.
Why do we need God? I've been doing just fine without him.

You sir are simply a thunderous cock smuggler.
You just touched on one of the primary reasons religion exist. Fear of death, and desire for afterlife. It is a nice warm blanket of a thought. But you need to hear it again, you are being controlled and led around like a fool based in part on this desire.
If there was ever a good reason to reject Christianity, it is because of you. The bile that spews out of your piehole must decay your teeth at an accelerated rate, it is so toxic.
""I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark," he added.
Hawking's latest comments go beyond those laid out in his 2010 book, The Grand Design, in which he asserted that there is no need for a creator to explain the existence of the universe."
Stephen Hawking
Wow :-( How sad. He gave SO much to humanity ! Just an amazing man. He will be missed, but never forgotten.
A great mind has passed. However I cant help thinking of the incredible hardship he suffered surviving with ALS, the particular type of motor neuron disease, (MND or Lou Gherig's disease) he had. HIs writings and speeches, incredible as they were, are all the more incredible when one remembers he had difficulty with nearly every daily human function not least breathing and swallowing for almost 50 years. He was a rare person indeed. I am glad his particular suffering is over. Vale Hawkings.
As sad as it is to lose a mind like Hawking, he squeezed every drop of life out of what he had.
The hilarity of one of the most intelligent people on the planet being called ignorant by one of the most ignorant religious apologists I've encountered is palpable.
Science and secularism nurtured a mind that advanced the very boundaries of science. Whereas religion has stultified and emboldened a mind that thinks it possesses infallible truth, but doesn't know how to abbreviate the phrase you are.
You have to fight to make sure that the influence people like that have over children's education is as minimal as possible.
genuine rational mind...
farewell......you're work will live on...
oh and goodbye FIG we'll be missing you..
cyb said that he's banned from AR..
I bet that he would find it amusing that his death happened on Pi Day.
One of the few public figures that I respected overall, no one is perfect, but his contribution to all of mankind cannot be overstated. He always inspired me to try and do 1/10th the contribution he has done, especially when one considers the entire time battling a crippling disease that slowly wasted away his body.
I feel no one I know of better fits the description of: a brilliant and powerful mind then Hawkings did.
Rip to a truly wonderful mind
The man had the most recognized "voice" on the planet. And with his incredible wit and sense of humor, that "voice" made his deliveries and punchlines all that much more hilarious. Such an amazing mind, and such a fantastic example of true human spirit and determination. I salute you, Mr. Hawkings.
Stephen Hawkings gave us so much understanding vs Billy Graham gave us a way to make Billy Graham rich.
"There is a fundamental difference between religion which is based on authority, and science which is based on observation and reason. Science will win because it works."
Stephen Hawking.
"I have noticed that even people who claim everything is predetermined and that we can do nothing to change it, look both ways before they cross the road."
Stephen Hawking
"The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge."
Stephen Hawking
I have been scrolling through Hawking's quotes online. This one made me laugh out loud:
"It's a pity that nobody has found an exploding black hole. If they had, I would have won a Nobel prize."
On top of everything else he was a funny guy.
The author of one of the many great books I have read, sadly missed.
