Something Wicked This Way Came

I live in a condominium complex with my father, who is in his eighties and in very poor health. Right now his pain is so bad that he can barely function. He spent most of last year in hospitals and rehab clinics. He was brought up,like my mother in strict christian households.

My mother died a horrible death 8 years ago from cancer. On her death bed she praised Jesus. At that moment I became a god hater. I practiced it with joy and spread my hate for it as much as I could.

Since then I have matured, (and calmed down) to embracing atheism. My father now curses god and has thrown out his bible. He said god is the father of pain. He is suffering I know. I am suffering with him. The, "I will pray for you", or, "You are in our prayers", does neither of us any good, but those are people that see him in pain and like many, do not know any better.

To my point. I let my atheism light shine in the neighborhood. Word has spread and we are being victimized by neighbors and people on the condo board. We are treated like leapers. If I speak to someone they say, I can't hear you! A neighbor who just moved in with his wife across the street came over and introduced himself and was very kind. However, Now he cannot hear me either as he gets in his new truck that has Jesus stickers and fish all over it and looks the other way.

These people all fly the american flag proudly, claim to be christians, see and know we are suffering and treat us like garbage. My mistake was thinking I would get any sympathy from any of them. Yes, something wicked this way came, and while they all think it is the evil atheist on the block, I know it is all of them and their wicked views and ways.

I am isolated and feel alone, so I thank you for letting me come here to gripe.

I will be thinking of all of you.

Sometimes it's not worth the hassle to let people know your stance. But the cat is out of the bag and there's no way to get it back in there.

It's amazing to me, how people who claim to believe in Jesus, treat people like this. Where's the "do unto others" in these situations?

Have you tried to look for support by atheist organisations or secular humanist organisations in your vicinity?

How about this:
Put up signs with the best Jesus quotes you can think of, to try to change their behaviour.

"And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins." - Mark 11:25

"But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." - Matthew 5:44

"So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets." - Matthew 7:12

This is what they claim to live by, so why don't they?

That's a great idea Pragmatic. How about this one?

"Judge not, that ye be not judged.
For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?"
Matthew 7:1-3 King James Version (KJV)

That's terrible. These people

That's terrible. These people pretend to follow Jesus, but they distort what he taught into pride and hate. According to the gospels, Jesus went out of his way to be kind and friendly to people who were outcasts from Jewish society, such as Matthew the tax collector. He intervened when a woman was about to be stoned for prostitution. It's interesting that you say you're being treated like lepers, because Jesus is supposed to have gone among the lepers and even cured some of them.

I can understand your feelings of betrayal. But atheists are everywhere. Search out a group near you and try to hook up with like-minded people. Enjoy some intelligent conversation.
