I learned about the Plagues of Egypt, the Crucifixion, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, and many others delightful stories in school scripture classes and at Sunday School before I was 10. None of my school history books contained detailed descriptions of what really happened during Caesar's invasion of Gaul, the Indian Mutiny, the Crusades, the Holocaust, and other historical atrocities.
The problem I see with making religion R or X rated is that then the kids would WANT to get their hands on it, just like cigarettes, booze, drugs, etc. When the adult says no, the kid says let me have it.
As to the awfulness in the bible, I recommend Dan Barker's book "God, the most unpleasant character in all fiction".
yes the old testament is hard reading in certain books, but i seen alot of children grow upin the church and wind up becoming good citizens of the community.it all depends on the individual.what life choices he or she will make.
