The purpose of life: Liberty and the pursuit of happiness
3 things how your life works, everyday....
choice, chance and unwanted circumstance.
this is my view of how human lives...IMO...
That's just plain sad. It appears you have no sense of happiness or self worth at all.
i didn't say i wasn't happy...it's how you do everyday of your life
exp: choice- you have a choice to choose which to eat, sandwich or burger
chance - would this satisfy me/ would this feed my hunger / does this taste good
unwanted circumstances - you accidentally dropped your food..
you don't know but you're doing this everyday(choice, chances, unwanted circumstances)...i'm 100% certain you do...don't deny it...it comes with you're happiness with it..
don't be vague and naive mike by what other people say on their view....like i said IMO..."in my opinion"
get it?got it? good.....
good boy mike
(just edited typo)
Oh. Sorry, I thought you meant something else entirely. My apologies.
This is absolute bullshit. I exist therefore I have the right to know why. And also, apparently everything that's a manmade concept is considered "stupid" unless it's science. Bullshit.
@Michael
"I have the right to know why."
Lol. I think I begin to better understand why you are so upset.
It is a bit like demanding "I have the right to a billion dollars!" And expecting to get it.
No it's not. Money is something you have to earn. A reason to live should be given to someone since their born.
@Michael Re: "A reason to live should be given to someone since their born."
*annoying buzzer sound* Wrong. Sorry, buddy, but that simply is not true. As has been stated before by others, neither nature nor the universe gives a single drop of rat piss as to whether you live or die. Nature and the universe are totally oblivious to how you feel or think. It is just that simple. Plain fact. And NOBODY is entitled to be given ANYTHING just because they were born. And if you happen to be fortunate enough to have been born and raised in a healthy/productive environment where you had food, clean water, modern conveniences, modern medical services, a decent educational system, and the freedom to use and enjoy those things, then you need to keep in mind these are things you were never ENTITLED to have. It just means you were one of the lucky ones who just happened to end up in that environment. Therefore, I would strongly recommend you quit your whining and bitching and be appreciative of the things and the people you have in your life. Because I guarantee you there are millions of other people on this planet who are not as fortunate who would trade places with you any day and be grateful for those things and take full advantage of them. But, alas, that choice is totally up to you. Again, nature and the universe do not give a shit what you feel or think.
@Micheal
I like your little scenario, makes me smile.
Here screaming baby just born: before I cut the umbilical cord, and wipe birth off you, and make sure you are crying and breathing, here is the reason to live/meaning of life: "42." I know you can not understand english or any spoken word right now, and you are very distracted right now, but there ya go, there is your reason to live, I fulfilled your "right" to have a reason to live since you were born.
...
In all seriousness, do you yet get an inkling how ridiculous your demand of "we all have a right to know the meaning of life" yet? Or do you need more examples of the ridiculousness of demanding something like that?
@Michael
Hi Michael. How are you going today?
"apparently everything that's a manmade concept is considered "stupid" unless it's science. Bullshit."
Yep- that certainly is bullshit. Who the hell told you that? Have nothing further to do with them, they're morons. Sanitation's not stupid. Art's not stupid. Comedy's not stupid. Puns are stupid, but my family adores and excels at them. My son is a bloody pun master- you don't know whether to laugh or groan. I think he'd pun at a funeral. I think he probably has punned at funerals- he had brief stint working as a funeral director. He wouldn't have punned the bereaved, though. Pretty sure he'll pun at my funeral. I hope so. I expect him to pun and my mother to sing Frosty the Snowman and do her weird little Frosty dance, if I predecease her.
You exist because your parents made love and here you are, Michael. That's it. That's the reason. What you do with your life to give it meaning and purpose and beauty is in your hands.
Have you thought any more about getting a cat? Both of ours are very elderly- one turns 19 this year. An enormous age for a cat. The other cat's 15 this year. We've decided ( that's me and Mum: I'm my Mum's live-in carer) to get a rescue cat next. A V&V cat: velcro and vocal. One you can have a conversation with and is only ever off your lap because you stood up. Both the cats we have are non-velcro and non-vocal. They're both persians- not lap cats, persians- they get too hot, I think- and generally pretty silent.
Edit: response to other comment by Michael
" That's just plain sad. It appears you have no sense of happiness or self worth at all."
Michael, the knowledge that our lives aren't part of god's plan and don't serve a higher purpose doesn't make us unhappy. We don't have a problem with being subject to choice, chance and unlooked for circumstances. It doesn't frighten us or make us sad. It makes us happy. We're like little kids. We get up in the morning and have no idea what the day will bring.
Some of those unlooked circumstances can be wonderful- like the small flock of red headed finches who visited my backyard last week. I was lucky enough to be outside on the patio when they turned up. Some of the chance circumstances can be hard to live through, but the positive is you have some knowledge to help others through bad times down the track, just as others helped you. You're making chance a negative thing, when it isn't. We're the sum total of our experiences- what you do with that determines your happiness and self-worth.
Take your experience of depression. You're clearly, badly depressed right now and I suspect it isn't the first time you've been here. You got through it and came out the other side before, you'll do it again. Your experience will be invaluable in helping others out of depression down the track. You'll be able to look suffering individuals in the eye and say " I know how you feel, but it will get better." But you need to get help to get through it right now, first. You're too far down to do it alone. That big, black dog's got you pinned to the floor. It's as big as house and it's squashed you flat. You can't get up without help. Please get help to get up, Michael.
@ Sushi That is a brilliant piece of writing. I hope Micheal takes it to heart.
So do I, Old Man. When I went through depression, I'd have liked a counsellor who understood what I was going through because they'd lived it. Michael can be that counsellor for others down the track if he gets help now.
@ Sushi
I am with you girl. I had to struggle on my own as well. Nearly did for me.
@Old Man
Anti-depressants helped. Gets you off those negative thought loops. Breaks the circuit. It's like being on a rat race, when your brain sticks you there, isn't it? You can't stop. Doesn’t matter how often people tell you to go out and do something...anything!...do something fun!...you can’t get off the rat race. YOU CAN'T STOP!
@ Sushi
I just went on a bender until I discovered Kendo and Jodo, Kendo is very cathartic, whacking the bejasus out an armoured man intent on doing the same to you I found the best anti depressant ever. In addition the zen meditation techniques that go with the art/sport were great antidotes to any depressive episode. Then when I took up Jodo I discovered frustrating an armed attack with only a 5' stick equally as empowering. Great fun seeing a guy with a sword pinned by his own tactics an unable to extricate himself to attack you..loved it. So I then ended up with Iai do as well ( the art of drawing the sword) which I also studied for some years. It requires great concentration and clarity of mind not just because it is so easy to lose fingers and thumb to a live katana.
My dog exists. She neither knows or cares why, at least that is the impression I get from her. She is also happy, very much so in fact, again, at least it seems to me.
You may have a curiosity to know why, but it's a fallacy to say you have a right to know why.
I also don't know why I'm here. I simply accept that I am and try to make the best of it.
"LIFE IS COMPLETELY INDIFFERENT TO YOUR EXISTENCE!"
"THE UNIVERSE DOES NOT OWN YOU ANYTHING."
"FAIRNESS IS A MAN MADE CONCEPT."
I disagree. The universe totally owns me! :P
But:
Do you think the universe does not OWE you anything? Which I think the OP originally meant, or at least his all caps short declaration makes more sense to me at this point.
"You talking to me?" Said in my best De Niro accent. I was making fun of Cogs typo Logic. Do I agree with his declaration? Yes, with a few caveats.
I was making fun of the typo too with ya, but rereading what I wrote I realized I phrased that poorly :)
@doG Re: "The universe totally owns me! :P"
I know how you feel. If anything, I am the one who owes the universe. I took out a second mortgage on my existence a few years ago to help get me through that reckless dare-devil period. Sure, I'm still in debt with it up to my eyeballs, but - heck - at least the interest rate is much lower.
@ TM
Wait a sec, a universal interest rate...Hmmmmm. Can we conceptualize, define and implement this please. Might be more fair than our present reality.
@doG
Well, I don't know how much more or less fair it would be. However, the way I see it, "they" are gonna have to keep me alive as long as possible if they want it paid off. And if I happen to die early still owing a large amount, then what are they gonna do? Sue me? *shrugging shoulders* In other words, regardless of which way it goes, WORTH IT! Cha-ching! *fist pump*
@doG
"Can we conceptualize, define and implement this please. Might be more fair than our present reality."
I think the obscenely wealthy already have one and it's zero or near enough. Lots of free money for the rich, and if they get a little too full of...er...'animal spirits'...the public purse will bail 'em out.
@Sushisnake
If you are rich, you are rewarded and paid to be rich.
If you are poor, you are penalized and charged for being poor.
-A badly paraphrased quote from a comedian whose name I have forgotten.
I have heard zuckerberg got multimillion dollar loans for his home for near zero rates, even though he could of easily afforded to pay all cash for the properties he bought.
@Logic
I've heard political economist Mark Blyth say it, too- but he wasn't joking. Neither was Piketty .
Ah, yeah I heard it in a comedy skit, obviously said much better/funnier than what I quoted, but it is a serious subject that touches on the very real problem of income inequality.
Pretty crazy how easy it is to get paid to be rich. Put a bunch of money in an index fund, dont touch it for 20 years, reinvest the dividends etc, walk away at least doubling your money, if not usually more. 1 hour of work to get paid, (potentially a lot,) for being so rich you can put away a bunch of money and not touch it for 20 years.
Where as if you are poor, there many well known numerous examples of being penalized monetary wise for being poor.
"That's just plain sad. It appears you have no sense of happiness or self worth at all."
Michael, self Worth is a measure of your actions, against others. Life is way to short to worry about what others think. Just follow your innate moral traits, and you will be fine. Happiness? Own yourself, and in doing so, happiness will likely find you. MLK jr. said, " Those who are not looking for happiness are the most likely to find it, because those who are searching forget that the surest way to be happy is to seek happiness for others". Someone else mentioned to you on another post, to go help the less fortunate...I personally think that, that suggestion, was an excellent one. I came home the other night. My wife had a cup of sweet Moroccan mint tea waiting for me by the couch. I slouched on the couch, and my dog jumped up and laid on her back beside me. I rubbed her chest/tummy cuz she loves that, and sipped my tea. I was happy.
"This is absolute bullshit. I exist therefore I have the right to know why. And also, apparently everything that's a manmade concept is considered "stupid" unless it's science. Bullshit."
Man is not infallible, but reason will bring to task any of our mistakes. The fact that you are on here, and question views, is a very good thing. Just don't circumvent reason.
