No it does not. Chernobyl = Chernobyl; a town in Russia.
What you might be referring to is "chornobyl." Which does refer to the plant Artemisia vulgaris, that's called mugwort in English. I remember looking this up in my English-Russian/Russian-English dictionary those many years ago.
Chornobyl is actually a combination of the words chornyi (black) and byllia (grass blades or stalks), thus, literally, it translates as "black grass" or "black stalks."
Wormwood in Russian would be "gor'kaya polyn'" which means "bitter wood." A very apt description of wormwood.
Wormwood refers to the plant Artemisia absinthium, the one used to make absinthe. Wormwood acquired its name because of its very bitter taste and its ability to act as a "de-wormer" (expelling intestinal worm infestations).
Thus, NO! Chernobyl does NOT translate as "wormwood" as depicted in Revelation 8:10-11.
Sorry. But that is nothing but a bunch of Christian bullshit created to scare us atheists. Did not work since a childhood friend was a Ukranian immigrant of refugee parents who spoke little English, thus I learned some Ukranian (Russian).
rmfr
Are the Ukranian and Russian translations slightly different .
No. The Russian language is the same as the Ukranian language. Just slightly different dialects such as Southern American English versus Yankee English. However, if you were to listen to Ukranians, the Russian language developed from Ukranian, when in fact, both developed from Cyrillic (I think).
rmfr
What?! Bible prophecy about Chenobyl?
Russian and Ukrainian are the same language?
Absinthe is make from woodworm?
I learn all this and I haven't yet finished breakfast!
Jeez I love this site.
So chornobyl is not even a type of wormwood.
Nope. It is a grass. Ain't tried it. Wonder if it is smokable?
rmfr
EDIT: Sorry, yes it in the same family, but it is a grass instead of a shrub (I think, IIRC).
I was told that chornobyl is a form of wormwood kinda like a Labrador is a form of dog it doesn't matter what the type is its a dog is this wrong.
@Spudnik, if you cling to Christianity due to an emotional attachment, you are not going to be persuaded by logical arguments that show Christian claims to be false.
I am not clinging to it i am no longer a christian but there is just a few things i need to know .
I see.
"Dog" is just a generic name for our "best friend". When it comes to plants its a different game altogether due to their chemistry. The tomato is part of the deadly nightshade family. The original wild almond had a compound in it similar to cyanide and it was bitter and lethal. Mankind crossbred both to remove the toxins...though I have read tomatos are still not good for arthiritics.
@ Grinseed
FYI: and eating ANY part of the tomato plant other than the fruit will kill you. Unless our long line of eugenics has made it non-deadly. 50 years ago it was. A story near where I lived was about a man who ate a stalk of the mater plant on a "bet" and he died from poisoning. The mater plant may have been GMOed (and see this essay) through artificial selection to where it is no longer poisonous. Hell, I was even told you had to cut out that stem dimple part of the mater to keep from getting any of the toxins.
Further FYI: Where I am from, we always called them maters, taters, and naners (tomato, potato, banana).

I have had a look and it seems that mugwort is actually wormwood.
To reillustrate arakish's excellent post:
Chernobyl is a town in russia famous for the nuclear power plant disaster. Where Chornobyl is a mugwort.
Two different words, two different spellings, two entirely different meanings.
It does not matter if mugwort is actually wormwood or not, it failed the first link. Revelation 8:10-11 wormwood prophecy is purely coincidence that wormwood may be associated with mugwort and mugwort has the name Chornobyl, and Chornobyl is similar in spelling to Chernobyl.
There is not just one very weak connection in this prophecy to Chornobyl but two! If it was 1 in 100 chance that one of these weak links was actually legitimate, two of them puts it 1 in 10,000. Not a claim any sane person would want to make to "prove" their prophecy.
Two very weak links and I could probably prove any prophecy to any scenario. Try it, pick any 100's year old vague flowery "prophecy" of doom and gloom that will happen someday in the future, and I bet I could connect it to the Chernobyl disaster. Using two very weak "connections" like the example you asked about.

Hang on i didn't realise that so the actual spellings and names are not even the same ok similar very similar but still a letter can change allot in a spelling. When ARAKISH suggested it was chornobyl i was talking about i thought he was saying i had spelt it wrong .
NIBIRU IS WORMWOOD, AND IT WILL DESTROY EARTH IN 2001... er, I mean... 2008... no, 2015... no, it still didn’t happen, so it surely must be... Uhmmm... 2022!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! REPENT OR FACE HELL, GODLESS HEATHENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Rohan Re: "REPENT OR FACE HELL, GODLESS 7HEATHENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
*on knees*..... *hands raised high above head*..... *repeatedly bowing up and down*... *frantic voice*... Oh, Great Rohan! I am a most unworthy heathen! Please, please! Tell me what this poor pitiful waste of sinful human flesh must do to save my SOUL from eternal damnation!.... *sitting straight up*... *hands clasped tightly together under chin*... Bless me with your wisdom, oh ye of great knowledge!!!... *tears streaming from eyes*....
(Oh, by the way. Welcome to the AR, young man. I must say, you fit in quite nicely here. *grin*)
Yes. It is still within the Atremisia family (or whatever that rank is called).

EDIT: corrected misspelling
Oh GREAT, yet another rapture prediction. They’re always wrong- no surprise.
These “predictions” circulate routinely. I’ve even seen some people making even more batshit-insane predictions that involve this apparently “winged” planet called Nibiru, which has also allegedly been somehow disguised as the Moon by NASA... and don’t even get me started on how I myself/Trump/Hillary/Obama (depending on who you ask) is the “Antichrist”... *FACEPALM*
Right; it would probably be easier to list national politicians who have not been accused of being the "Antichrist", probably a smaller list.
The new pledge.
I am not, nor have I ever been, an Antichrist, so help me god.
And that just proves my claim that I am.

Anti-christs don't go round warning folks about eating the non fruit parts of tomatos. Thanks for that head up. I could have poisoned myself...so sadly you suck as an antichrist. You sre too considerate.
But didn't Christ say:
"Don't think that I came to send peace on the earth. I didn't come to send peace, but a sword. For I came to set a man at odds against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. A man's foes will be those of his own household. He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me isn't worthy of me."
Thus, if I am the Anti-Christ...
rmfr
No, Arakish, I wont have it. You are not the Anti-Christ, you're just a very naughty boy.
**spreads wings triumphantly**
wheeeeee...so happy...I got to use that quote from Life of Brian before I died....arrrk! aark! whose a pretty boy then?
The punch line is that the nuclear disaster isn't even the worst thing that's happened in Chernobyl.
There used to be a big Jewish community there. They suffered two pogroms under the Czarist regime and the ones that didn't flee were finished off by the Nazis during WW2. The area also suffered a huge famine caused by Stalin's collectivization of agriculture and the idiotic doctrine of Lysenkoism. So I guess a little bit of radioactivity would be just another day in the workers' paradise for the happy people of Chernobyl.
But if the author of Revelations was really predicting a big nuclear disaster, he should have called the star "Fukushima" or "Tokyo Electric Power."
There is a place called Wormwood Scrubs in London, which is most famous for its prison. Notable inmates include the serial killer Ian Brady, Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, and Oscar Wilde's lover Bosie.
Wormwood is a reasonably common plant. I'm guessing there are places named after it in various countries around the world.
People assign meaning to words, words are not prescient, and different people assign different meaning to similar words sometimes. People who are superstitious and biased towards supernatural and so called paranormal explanations tend to use section bias and all manner of logical fallacies to convince themselves their beliefs are valid. In case I'm being unclear, I'm saying that you are such a person, judging from your posts on here.
