Or, a way of appearing that one is doing something to help without actually doing anything?
To what purpose?
I can't be sure because I don't pray. However, it frequently appears to me that one who says, "I'll pray for you/them/whomever," doesn't actually want to feed/clothe/house/whatever the person, they just want to appear that they have done something...either to look good to themselves or others.
Well, if they are trying to look good to themselves and others I can fit your answer into the brainwashing category. They are obviously attempting to to convince themselves and others of their benevolence.
Dont pray just because you are asked to pray. But also Pray because you wanted to pray and praise one worthy of praise. Pray as if you have only few more chances to pray because these are the only chances you've been given. After that there is no more praying. Once the soul is taken there will be no coming back. And on that day the Lord will say. I asked you to pray and you did. Now dwell in Paradise forever no more prayers.
Daily routine of prayer have the MORE psychological and physiological benefits than mindful meditation if done properly. If prayer was because of some brainwashing then God would have not asked for it instead built in all of us just like the heart and eyes. We would have prayed just like we eat food. But its part of the test of a believer. and also a source of thanking and asking for more.
May Allah swt Guide us All.
Ameen
"then God would have not asked for it"
jesus and muhamed combined, how can you be so ......
do you or do you not understand that we do not believe that your god even exists!
How can you give the reason for prayer as if we acknowledge god existence.
The loss of touch with reality displayed by people like you, always amazes me.
@Jamal,
Personally, especially where Islam is concerned, I believe prayer to be brainwashing for the young and self-hypnosis for the older people. However, I do see where all that bending could be good for the back.
