Mother murdered for complaining about priests abusing her child

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-07-12/trace-police-admit-to-major-dna-bu...

In 1980 a young mother in Melbourne learned that her younger child was being abused by priests. She phoned the church to complain. Shortly afterwards she was stabbed to death. One of the priests, Father Anthony Bongiorno, was seen running from the woman's house covered in blood. When someone asked him if he was hurt, he replied that he'd scratched himself on some roses. The police took DNA samples, but they bungled the tests, and the priest got off. The case is still classified as unsolved. A detective involved in the case said that at that time none of the police even imagined that a priest could have committed crimes like child abuse and murder.

After the murder, the same priest actually performed the victim's funeral, and later he slandered her memory by claiming that she'd been working as a prostitute. The church transferred him to another parish, where he abused more little boys.

The "human error" seems to

The "human error" seems to have resulted in two unsolved homicides....

"(Police) apologised to me for what's happened, and they apologised for previously being told that Father Bongiorno had been eliminated, whereas now they can confirm Bongiorno has not been eliminated through any type of DNA testing," he said.

"I acknowledge human error is a fact of life, but it seems a bit odd that somehow this pillowcase got put into mum's evidence lot."

The mistake also raises questions about the fate of the other unsolved investigation from which the misplaced pillowcase originated.
Fontana would not reveal the details of that case, except to say that it dated back "a lot further" than the James investigation.
Unquote.

Given the extent of paedophilia proved against the R Catholic Church and the evidence that clerical crimes are sometimes covered-up to "protect" institutions, the idea that clerics are less likely criminal suspects than any other occupation should not persist.

This from the UK...

It was only after the church realised that £3,954.68 had been taken from collection money that an urgent parish meeting was called.

Isn't the typical cop's IQ

Isn't the typical cop's IQ 100? So there are very few Sherlock Holmes working as cops.

Diotrephes makes an important

Diotrephes makes an important point. Uniformed policing requires very different skills from detective work. It's not just that police detectives don't have especially high IQ's. The problem is more that they are sourced from an unnecessarily limited pool, which is the Uniformed branch of the service. The Met Police UK are trying to address that serious deficiency...

in the face of much ignorance of the subject.

The very headline in this article misunderstands the question...
https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/may/31/wanted-london-detectives...
as "no experience necessary" seems to imply that only uniformed police officers have suitable experience for the detective branch of policing, while every other candidate has "no experience".
