It's a lie.

Wandering around the suburban wilds of north metro Atlanta recently, I came upon a church sign that seems to confirm the atheist view:

"Jesus Christ
Our hope lies (sic) in him."

The "Preaching Minister," David Chisholm is, I think, telling us that it is a lie to put one's hope in Jesus Christ.

Well said, Sir.

(English can be such a tricky language for the unwary.)

Alembé,

Alembé,

"Jesus Christ
Our hope lies (sic) in him."

So what should the sign say?

Hi Diotrephes,

Hi Diotrephes,

In 1966 at Grammar School, my English teacher Mr. Bush taught me: "Jesus Christ, our hope lays in him."

Compare:

Donald Trump lies about sexually assaulting women.

Donald Trump lays in bed eating McDonalds.

@Alembe: "Jesus Christ, our

@Alembe: "Jesus Christ, our hope lays in him."

Then I think your English teacher got it wrong. "Lay" is a transitive verb meaning to place something on the ground. It's most often used with eggs. There's a line in a famous prayer in which it's used reflexively: "Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep."

Bob Dylan also used "lay" incorrectly to mean "lie" in "Lay Lady Lay".

"Lie" is an intransitive verb meaning to recline, or to speak untruthfully.

"Donald Trump lays in bed eating McDonalds."
That's a horrible picture. But unless he's laying eggs, it should be "lies in bed".

To make it even more confusing, the past tense of "lie" is "lay" if it means "recline" and "lied" if it means told a fib. The past tense of "lay an egg" is "laid an egg".

And there are the nouns. That's a lie. The lie of the land. A good lay. The lay of the last minstrel.

Hi Algebe,

Hi Algebe,

Did I mention something about "English being a tricky language?" I will concede the grammatical battle but claim a minor Phyrric victory in the sense that it is a lie to put any hope in JC.

You're right there. He was probably a terrible lay, too.

Correct, you lie on a bed,

Correct, you lie on a bed, but you lay a book down, as the first has no direct object, in the second the book is the direct object. However and just to prove the point that English really is a complex language, the past tense of lie is lay.

So here we go...

Last week, Steve lay down on the floor.
The cat lay in the mud after it rained yesterday.

The past tense of lay is laid, so

Last week, I laid the TPS report on your desk.
Mary forcefully laid her ring on the table.

The past participle of lie is lain, so

Steve has lain on the floor for days.
The cat has lain in the mud for hours.

The past participle of lay is laid, so

I have laid the TPS report on your desk.
Mary has forcefully laid her ring on the table.

My head hurts...

I lie around all day with my head laid upon my pillow lying to everybody on the phone about my chicken that laid an egg the size of a grapefruit. Then I lay down the phone to go see if the chicken has lain any more. But, alas, she just sits there hoping to get laid.

Edited for last sentence.

I lie around all day lying except for when I have lain down on the floor after getting laid because I laid my lying ass off for having lied about laying eggs.
