Iceland Revives Norse Mythology

In a move that will turn heads in Iceland, a group has successfully won the right to build a temple to the Norse gods like Odin and Thor.

What do you guys think? Its nice they openly say they don't believe in the myths but it's more a cultural and poetic thing.

And at least it's a change from the standard deal from the main religions.

Shucks, I actually think the Norse gods are pretty damn cool. Helluva lot better than the Christian or Muslim characters, at least. (Plus, my ancestry has a strong foothold in that part of the world. *chuckle*) Granted, even if those gods were real I would not worship them. However, I would at least have more respect for and toward them than the Christian/Muslim varieties.

Anyone here ever watch "American Gods" tv series on Starz?

Norse gods are awesome, if a bit, (okay a lot,) brutal.

It is actually pretty amazing that people had to fight for their right to build a temple in Iceland. I guess there is no "religious freedom" unless it is for whichever ones are popular. Something that *SHOULD* be terrifying to any religious person. Of course they all think their god is the right one and that they will always "win" and be the popular one that gets to make all the rules.

Didn't watch the series, but I did read the book. Incredibly fun (and informative) read. You ever watch the series "Vikings"? Speaking of Norse gods, THAT was a bad-ass show. *grin*

I studied Old Icelandic for a little while at university (40 years ago!). Their literature shows great humor and a healthy disrespect for the gods. My favorite story relates how Thor's hammer was stolen and he had to dress up as a bride and go through a wedding ceremony to get it back.

I think it is great; another example of how ridiculous religion is.

I don't think religion will go away, but it could sure be knocked down a few pegs.

They'll need a few assertive female devotees to perform the role of Valkyries.
