I didn't think this was allowed.

Straight to the point: This quarters book reeding assignment in my school is the Bible. My question: Isn't that against the law here in the U.S?

They can use it as

They can use it as "comparative religion" just as long as they don't proselytize. Fat chance of that not happening. If it is safe, use your smarts and refute anything the teacher tries to present as "true". If it's not safe, just keep your head down and wait for better days.

A few years ago the incoming freshman class at UINC had to read the Quoran as their summer assignment. You should have seen the hew and cry from conservative Christian NC.

You should take the

You should take the opportunity to learn about the Bible. It's a pivotal part of Western culture, and it's had a huge influence on the English language, art history, politics, law, literature, and many other areas. You should also learn something about the Bible's history. For example, who chose the books that make up the Bible? Who translated the various English versions? Did they get it right?

It's a horrible book, but an extremely important one. We all need to know a bit about it. In fact, the more you learn about it, the less likely you are to be fooled by all the nonsense written between its covers.

Sir Random,

Sir Random,

I forgot to ask what translation they are using? Is it the King James Bible? An outstanding translation is "The New Oxford Annotated Bible: New Revised Standard Version With The Apocrypha" (Fully Revised Fourth Edition). Lots of footnotes and pages of commentary make it a serious study book. That's an upgrade of the main translation that I've used.

Yes, Virginia, there are such things as real Bible scholars! They may be religious or secular, but their work is all about understanding what the Bible's various authors really meant, how the Bible was pieced together over the ages, the kinds of changes that sneaked in later, when the various parts were written, what the best manuscripts are, what the meaning of obscure words are, etc. That is, they start with the data and draw the most objective conclusions they can. Over the years they have developed a remarkable tool kit. Real Bible scholars are not in the business of defending the Bible against errors. They are the ones who originally found those errors (the more subtle ones)! Compare that with Bible apologists who begin with pet doctrines and defend them with everything except the kitchen sink. In the past a few of them had a foot in both worlds, being too scholarly to dismiss as a total bumpkin but not without a load of prejudice.

The bible is worth studying

The bible is worth studying as an early example of literature in translation. It's been a major influence on other literature as well. There's something in there for everyone. The Bible's a mystery novel, a thriller, a war story, a sci-fi epic, a soap opera, and of course a supernatural horror story. There's even a bit of porn.

If you are in a mood to disrupt the class a bit more.... I suggest you do a comparative study of the bible and quran.....

If you are in a mood to make it a bit interesting, discuss the differences.
If you are in a mood to create havoc, discuss the similarities and in accuracies (How both have the same nonsense)

Let us know how it goes.

700,00+ words/qtr. No sweat. A little light reading will do you good so secure those rifles and have a little fun with it.

I've posted this before. It's an essay by Scott Bidstrup and a thoroughly engaging read. A mere glimpse into the bible but at least it smacks of truth where the bible doesn't seem to engage that virtue anywhere.

May I also suggest following his links for additional tasty bits such as -
