Idk.
I wouldn't celebrate X-Mas if the people around me didn't celebrate it. I don't like being a party pooper, so I even placed up lights. I placed up a tree, and hung lights on it.
Christmas holiday means something different to everyone, for me it means nothing, but as said before, I am a nice person and not a party pooper.

Well I still haven't dug my trenches for the war on Christmas this year. Nothing like the last minute!
Just to wish the forum a happy and peaceful winter solstice …...
Well, with my wife being Pagan, she naturally LOVES Christmas (Winter Solstice)... *chuckle*... We put up our tree and decorate the house the day after Thanksgiving every year. Since her two kids are now out on their own, it has become our own little annual "ritual" over the last two or three years. Makes her happy, and I enjoy helping with it all. Amazing to me how much more I enjoy it now without all the bothersome religious connotations leaving a slimy feeling over everything. It is really nice being able to relax and appreciate the season by sharing good food, exchanging gifts, and having a few laughs with family and friends. No god required. Happy holidays, everybody... *grin*...
And a very happy Mid Winter to you and yours!
Actually longest day of the year here in Australia today...so Happy Summer Solstice!!!!
Oh and since it is Christmas/Yule/whatever; I thought I'd link an audio version of Lovecraft's short "Christmas" story: The Festival.
/e Oh and its mild horror; so if horror isn't your thing, maybe you should skip it.
You all mean a great deal to me so I raise my glass for the winter holidays in your honor!
Happy Holidays everyone!

Oh, happy solstice everyone, and happy holidays!
@Cog
Ummm... *scratching head*... Exactly, uh, how.... do you have... ummm... me secured to... the top of that tree?... *cringing*... Oh, never mind. I don't think I want to know....
@Tin: Superglue.
@Fievel, decorating evergreen trees and decorating homes with evergreen boughs and branches is an old, old, pre-christian pagan celebration of rebirth and regeneration, accompanying the change of seasons from winter to spring, and the return of the sun.
These were powerful and vitally important concerns for the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and even Vikings who weren't too sure the seasons would change every year. The alternative, a perpetual winter or summer, down here in the bushfire plagued part of the southern hemisphere, was too awful to contemplate, and they were cautious enough not to take things for granted. Decorating their homes was a demonstrative and comforting way to invoke that regeneration and reassure themselves. Enjoy the experience.
It should still be an important event, even in this industrial, environmentally concerned age, and it should mean more than some arbitrarily designated birthday of yet another proclaimed son of a god.
Happy Solstice to all the nice people, like Fievel, here at AR.
@Grinseed
Thanks so much. And thanks for the info.
Have a happy holiday. ;-)
One of the primary roles of priests in such ancient cultures as Babylon and Egypt was to study the heavens so they could predict the seasons. As Grinseed has pointed out, a change of seasons was not just convenient, it was necessary for any community's survival. And knowing when the seasons changed was important for sowing the crop, and harvesting it.
Think about this: one important time of year was the change from winter to spring, a rebirth of everything, a time to celebrate fertility. And some tales from different religions was the death of a god and their rebirth in the spring. Easter anyone? As if christianity didn't steal tales from other cultures ......

Considering the number of known religions, I would have to say many things came from many other religions. I pulled myself away from believing in any, as they seem like a crock.
@ Tin, if you are still a chrissy decoration well after the holiday season, I know a nice bloke with a chainsaw who might help, OK?
PM me if it embarrasses you to mention it. You know me, Ill be discreet.
@Grin
Not too worried about the super glue. A brief dip in some fingernail polish remover should handle that. But do you have any idea how difficult it is to remove pine resin?... *groan*... Especially if it's been packed into hard-to-reach crevices. That shit is worse than roofing tar! On a lighter note, it's a really nice view from up here, at least... *looking around through binoculars*...
@RE: Pine Resin? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha..... You have not been paying attention. You have not seen yourself plugged in yet? Where do you think those Christmas tree lights are and how do you imagine they got there?

@Cog Re: Lights
Hey, cool! I've been upgraded! Now I can go apply for the job as a traffic light I've always wanted... *clapping excitedly*... Please tell me you made the power cord retractable, though.
@Tin: RE: Power cord./ Sorry, no. You have to literally back up to a power source and plug in. I suppose you could use an extension cord if your arms are long enough to reach around and find the plug.
A little Preparation+H would go well with that chain saw/
No Decorations this year, it was the wife's thing anyway. I'll be visiting family on the 25th, and they're all coming over with some friends on new years eve. I still have to work on Monday and Tuesday of course, but then I get a week off,, yippee.
Have a fantastic holiday everyone.
Here Xmas time means a lot of drunk idiots on the roads. I suspect it's much the same in many "Christian countries"
So to everyone, please enjoy yourselves AND stay safe.
A happy and safe humbug to all, don't care if you are overflowing with good will or not.
It's 0914 Xmas day. The turkey is cooked, the salads are done. I'm ready for the dinners.
I'm a picture of elegance, wearing the summer uniform of the Aussie male; khaki cargo shorts, sandals (NO SOCKS!) and my festive T shirt . It features a very sour looking cat, wearing a red and white xmas hat. The caption " IS THIS JOLLY ENOUGH?"
I had considered one with the caption ":Merry Fucking Xmas" or "Ho Fucking Ho" (Ebay, $AU20, delivered) Decided not because I wouldn't be able to wear them in public .Especially at the huge regional mall. Real honesty is rarely appreciated.
Thanks All for your kind words.
Have a very merry, Happy Holidays.
Merry X-Mas.
