I mostly agree with OP. The individuals who believe and harm no one, including themselves, I would tend to leave in peace.
I get steamed by the fakers who take their money.
@Gagan: We should respect that and don't try to change who is strong believer of GOD.
I can agree with that sentiment. I just wish it was reciprocated by the religionists who try to impose their nonsensical beliefs on others by interfering in education and government and opposing social change over issues like slavery, women's suffrage, contraception, abortion, and the legalization of homosexuality.
And when they turn up on my doorstep trying to sell me their crazy fantasies, the gloves come off.
Just a few reasons why it's a big problem to respect peoples belief in a God:
- genital mutilation
- misogyny
- indoctrination of innocent children
- absurd levels of delusion ("Ten year old girl can't wait to die so she can be with god")
- discrimination of non-heterosexuals
- undermining of education
- the corrupting of politics
- the corrupting of justice systems
- enabling of sexual abuse (Clergy moving their members to new places)
- sexual abuse (some is considered legal)
- crime concealment (Clergy protecting their abusive members)
There a status quo that is necessary in order for theists and athiest to both be happy and live their lives happily...
And that is for religion to be exempt from education in being taught as a fact I.e. scientifically.
It should only be there via mediums such as English literature.
Furthermore, it needs to be exempt from political influence.
Only then will there be a fairness and a level playing field.
It's when religion tries to infiltrate every single element of life and culture that it causes disharmony amongst believers of other faiths, as well as non believers.
My personal opinion, and almost a mantra of sorts is... believe what you like, live how you want... but shut the fuck up about it.
aaaaaaHAHAHAHA
Hero, you so funny.
However, you cain't jest shaddup about stuffs. Ya gotta communicate with folks.
But you is still so funny. And handsome. By golly. Take off your shirt; it's awfully hot in here, don't ya think? ;)
Haha, sorry but that's simply my opinion on religion! You want an imaginary friend? You want some safety net from the fear of death? You want a get out of jail card for being a prick (sinning)?
Fine, but keep it to your bloody self!
My hero, The Hitch eloquently summed it up...
"Second, I hope I've made it clear, that I'm perfectly happy for people to have these toys, and to play with them at home, and hug them to themselves and so on, and to share them with other people who come around and play with the toys. So that's absolutely fine. They are not to make me play with these toys. I will not play with the toys. Don't bring the toys to my house, don't say my children must play with these toys, don't say my toys might be a condom - here we go again - are not allowed by their toys. I'm not going to have any of that."
It is outrageous that schools generally teach religion as part of their curriculum rather than philosophy (which includes religion).
I'll say it again. The people are the way they are because of the religion. The religion has held them back and made the psychologically reliant on magical thinking, wishes, and hopeful prayers. It is not a matter of leaving the people alone because they are doing no one any harm. They are the way they are because they have been indoctrinated into being docile, not having opinions, leaving all the tough stuff to god. That is until the Church manipulates them into fighting a Holy War for Weapons of Mass Destruction or some such silliness. Then the ignorant fall in line to do God's good work. RELIGION IS THE PROBLEM NOT THE PEOPLE. At the same time, people become the problem when they blindly believe in and follow nonsense.
