I personally like 'em. If I see 'em, I know what's written between them is an aside, usually a joke about what the writer is doing as they write information, rather than part of the information. Absent asterisks would fuck up the text flow and render it incoherent.
Yes, you could use brackets instead ( the internet ruling is they're still ok) but sometimes you need to use brackets inside the text, too, to relay information, so if you're using brackets both within the text AND to signify asides that are not part of the text...well, you would fuck up the text flow and render it incoherent. Consider Tin Man's above post. It would make no sense without the asterisks. In fact, many, (most?) of Tin Man's posts would make no sense without the asterisks. Not because Tin Man makes no sense ( perish the thought) but because the text flow needs the asterisks for clarity and coherence.
Here endeth the pendantry for today. Probably. Hard to say, really. It's possible someone else may stand on my pedantic little toes later. It's still morning, after all.
Oh! By the way! I'd never used asterisks until Tin Man showed me how it's done. Thanks, Tin Man. :-)

If they are telling an Indian story fair enough. I was cast twice in Mumbai movies as a white colonial Dad. It portrayed the events of a story based in India and the actors were Indian. I've been in a Japanese movie, the actors were mainly Japanese as it was based in Japan. Cowboy movies are predominantly white...except that historically, white cowboys were a substantial minority I believe...Many movies featuring an all white 7th Cav coming to the rescue where it would have been much more likely to have been detachments of the 10th Cav (Buffalo soldiers). Whole convoys of wholesome American white people travelling west on wagons, yet many thousands of those were Irish, German, Czechs, Jewish....

That's why I mention that you have a "John Wayne" view of your culture, it is skewed, rotten and wrong. Like the sanitised "history" pumped out by Hollowood and Hallmark films.

I'm a 52 year old white man, I don't loath or hate myself, and am proud of my cultural heritage, but I despise racism, bigotry and prejudice of all types. You're setting up a false dichotomy as if I can only respect other cultures and ethnicity by persecuting my own, that's nonsense sorry.
Err no, I am just a guy that works pays bills and taxes and takes responsibility for my own destiny and don't stand dumbly at the trough waiting for a free hand out or blame anyone else for my lot.
The world is brutal, old white men built the most free, safe, enlightened advanced civilization ever , the left only really have one valid thing they can say for their privileged position they were born into...that would be thanks to the forefathers that fought for it , built it and handed it to them.

Everyone here, regardless of where they are in the world, could supply a similar video from their country. I could have found some beauties from the US, the UK, the EU and Canada.
Takes a bit of age before you notice you've heard the bullshit many times before. Takes awhile before you ask yourself who benefits from the bullshit. Takes time to realise you've been watching Divide and Rule for Dummies in action all your life- and it's very, very effective. Many never realise it and spend their entire lives marching to the beat of the left/right drum, blaming the other side for every ill in the world, just like theists blame Evil. Politicians love 'em because they're SO EASY to manipulate. Others just give up on the whole damn thing and can't care anymore. They're resigned to it: " Doesn't matter who's in power cos it's a crooked game. It goes on and on and we get ripped off just the same", as an old Redgum song put it. Some quit before they start- that's why a lot of Millennials don't vote.

I am a little bit. Now at home and work is allowing me to work from home until I get the surgeries over with. Arrrgh...
Anyway, I cannot remember which journal, but I did read a medical journal paper that found that the combination of cooler temperatures and higher oxygen (if you are hooke up) does help to stave off infection. Additionally, slightly higher oxygen concentrations also helps to promote healing.
However, I still hate how cold it is...

Well at least I now know there's a reason for it! I used to be a regular at A&E with clients with disability, so regular, the nurses would bring two blankets from the warmer- one for the client and one for me. In the tropics, I kid you not.

Oh I think you know what I meant TD, the clown who started this thread was clearly a bigoted racist, and a homophobic troll. I'm doing you the courtesy of not bracketing you in with him.
The achievements of white Europeans have to be viewed in the context of everything they have done, so gushing praise on them seems odd since their achievements also include the trans Atlantic slave trade, and the genocide of the indigenous American people. Not to mention two world wars, and the political fall out is still fucking up global politics today.
We can't rewrite history, nor should we try, but we can learn from it, and the way to avoid repeating the barbaric injustices of our recent past is to acknowledge skin colour should be an irrelevance, universal human rights is an essential goal, and ethnicity can only be celebrated for it's diversity without prejudice or discrimination. Race and gender equality are a necessity, a goal no decent society or person should try and avoid. If that means an accusatory finger is levelled at the behaviour of powerful white men then so be it, as long as it's done objectively with integrity and justice as it's aims, then decent people should have nothing to fear.
Does it count as honorably building a civilization if you murder all of the people living where you'd like to build it and then having your slaves build it for you?
I can be deeply thankful for the things I have in my life and also absolutely refuse to thank those forefathers who built this country on the graves of those who came before us.
Also, you speak of not waiting for a handout, but if you are a white man, you had tons of power and privilege handed to you the moment you were born. It's laughable that you would take credit for all of the success in your life by hard work and look down at your nose at those who were not dealt the same cards as you.
