Education or Indoctrination? Evergreen College

Evergreen college has been in the news lately for some thought provoking reasons. If your not aware of what took place there here is a source to update you: https://whyevolutionistrue.wordpress.com/2017/06/11/the-latest-on-evergr...

Do you support Bret Weinstein or the students?

P. S.
Since this is a controversial topic, I will not be surprised with no responses (crickets)

stopped reading at "the reputation of Regressive and Authoritarian Leftists".

When people start capitalizing adjectives like that, run for the hills.

In the coming months it will

In the coming months it will be interesting to watch Evergreen College's rates of new student enrollment. Considering what happened after the University of Missouri's student protests: http://www.nationalreview.com/article/433171/mizzou-campus-protests-driv...

Buyers beware : )

Sound rather racist,a college

Sound rather racist,a college-sponsored Day of Absence on April 10, when white students, faculty, and staff had been encouraged to make themselves scarce on campus. Are there any days that black people are suppose to be scarce?
EDIT

ImFree's picture
Hypocritical when one racial

Hypocritical when one racial group does the same thing to another racial group that the first racial group is complaining about. Especially when the teachers were very empathetic to the cause. Evergreen is a very liberal college. Pretty pathetic the way the teachers were treated. Especially the female teacher that looked terrified as they yelled at her. She is the first one in this video, hard to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tuc40cGydks

xenoview: "Are there any days that black people are suppose to be scare?"

That would not even be considered.

The commentator at the end of the video does a pretty good job of summing the situation up.

A "Day of Absence" sounds

A "Day of Absence" sounds like a really great way to deepen and perpetuate resentment.

Exactly, really sad.

Exactly Algebe , really sad.

ImFree,

ImFree,

That's basically a BS article that written in such a way as to incite animosity. The Day of Absence/Day of Presence program has been part of Evergreen College since the early 1970s. There's only about 200 black students in the whole school. In previous years the black students took the day off campus and went to another site. This year the white students decided that they would leave the campus for the day and that the black students would stay on campus. The purpose of the exercise was to reflect on racial issues and how society is stronger when everyone is united.

It seems that the professor, Bret Weinstein = http://evergreen.edu/directory/people/bretw = might be a new hire (unable to verify) and was unaware of the school's tradition. So he stayed. Then, in late May, a group of about 50 students confronted him.

"Whereas many of the headline-grabbing incidents at colleges lately have involved protests of conservative speakers, this incident was markedly different. In this case, a student group asked that their white peers and instructors take a "Day of Absence" from campus life to "explore issues of race, equity, allyship, inclusion and privilege." (The "Day of Absence" is traditionally a day where students and faculty of color leave campus to highlight their important roles at the school.) After hearing about the event, Weinstein, a white biology professor, sent the organizers an email expressing his disagreement with the new "Day of Absence" idea and his intent to not participate.

The "Day of Absence" at Evergreen State came and went. Weinstein and his students' presence on campus evidently did not disrupt the event, because it was not until over a month later, in late May, when a group of around 50 students angrily confronted Weinstein over his lack of participation and demanded that he resign."

Now = "More than 50 faculty members at Evergreen State College are calling on the administration to punish a professor who refused to participate in a no-whites day on campus."

So the incident happened because Weinstein did not observe group norms and rituals.

You have the right to be informed.

You can rationalize all you

You can rationalize all you want Diotrephes, its still discrimination based on race. What is next? Separate rest rooms and drinking fountains based on race? You have the right to be wrong.

Sky Pilot's picture
ImFree,

ImFree,

So who's doing the discrimination?

LogicFTW's picture
Do you really think separate

Do you really think separate restrooms and drinking fountains are next? Really? I mean really really? Are you really worried that in a few short years white people are going to be treated like how black or other minorities have been treated for generations in this country?

If you really gotta worry about some sort of divide, I kindly recommend you worry about the ever growing income inequality gap, where the extremely rich few live like gods, while most of the rest of us fight to have quality healthcare without bankrupting the entire family.

I will agree, media and the students etc that demanded this professor's resignation is going overboard, but I feel this should not have been news at all, or certainly not to the level of attention it got.

The real news is: yes: discrimination and racism is definitely still occurring in the 21st century in the US. As a society we really need to hurry up and get over this ridiculous infatuation with skin color. Kind of like we really need to move on from religions as a whole, we all will be much better for it.

To me it is as ridiculous as treating someone who has a longer forefinger, (index finger) than ring finger, as different and inferior somehow. Utterly ridiculous, and very harmful.

ImFree's picture
LogicForTW :“Do you really

LogicForTW :“Do you really think separate restrooms and drinking fountains are next? Really? I mean really really?”

No, not at all and your being dishonest because you know damn well I was using sarcasm to make a point that the students were being hypocritical requesting people be separated on the basis of race.

LogicForTW :”I will agree, media and the students etc that demanded this professor's resignation is going overboard, but I feel this should not have been news at all, or certainly not to the level of attention it got.”

Oh really? And if the races were reversed using “tradition” as justification for the separation do you think that would not generate ample news coverage and protests? The racial hypocrisy is why it generated news coverage, and you damn well know it.

LogicForTW :” real news is: yes: discrimination and racism is definitely still occurring in the 21st century in the US. As a society we really need to hurry up and get over this ridiculous infatuation with skin color. That needs to be conveyed to people like the students of Evergreen that being hypocritical and subjecting others to discrimination based on race only makes matters worse. Using racism to solve alleged racism is never going to be any kind of resolution.

I wanted to believe it was

I wanted to believe it was sarcasm, and I am glad you say it is. So you were not really saying anything, just trying to be... funny?

I agreed with you that it was overboard, and you think I automatically would flip if it was the other way around? If it was I would still agree, it should not have got the news coverage it was. We as all the same race, need to get over our skin color infatuation, yes it absolutely works both ways. I agreed with you about the news coverage! Singing to the choir here, I am the opposite of white power etc, and I still feel all this media attention over this particular color issue should stop. The coverage instead should be, overall harmful skin color based inequalities, that should go away entierly, I would love it for skin color to fall to the level of every other physical outward attribute, like hair color, nose size, ear size, etc. Where there is no biases.

I kind of sort of agree with your last point, but it is very easy for that to come off as racist or unfair to others, I am arguing, I would love to see media attention on all this stop, because its a non issue non story because everyone everywhere stopped with their skin color infatuation.

LogicForTW:“I wanted to

LogicForTW:“I wanted to believe it was sarcasm, and I am glad you say it is. So you were not really saying anything, just trying to be... funny?”

I wanted to show how extreme the student's racial segregation request/demands were and used sarcasm to make the point. Not intended to be funny at all, but using sarcasm to convey frustration of how ridiculous it is to promote racial segregation as a solution when in reality that is moving backwards. By the way, I remember seeing segregated drinking fountains when I was a very little kid. They were in a store called Montgomery Wards. I was really young, about two or so years old. Never will forget that.

I was impressed that Professor Bret Weinstein stood up and refused to fall in line when pressed to do so. He recognized the students had gone too far. Generating all the attention he did I am curious how he will handle his new found recognition. He just set up a Youtube account by the name of The Evolutionist. Time will tell.

Now, I have no idea of what

Now, I have no idea of what future will bring, but some places already have racially segragated dorms:

So, I would not rule out anything.

Race , as a concept, is like

Race , as a concept, is like religion. It originated during the infancy of our species. One day it will be a non issue, I hope. Until then, infantile race baiters will continue to push the issue.
