Atheists on Atheists forums usually discuss the validity of a god or more accurately the lack of validity. However, the believers and mostly the christians take it as a personal insult that we even have such discussions. They take it as a personal insult that we atheists dare to even question the validity of christianity.
I always wondered why? Could it be that they are afraid what is revealed in such discussions? Surely these christians are secure enough in their faith that anything an atheist says about their god could never be "personally" insulting.
For example, atheists don't "defend" atheism. They defend truth and facts. I don't take it personally when christians say that atheists have no morality. What I take exception to is that that is a false statement. I could really give a shit if every single atheist is moral or not. I am more interested in the fact that being an atheist or a believer does not make you moral or immoral.
But christians, in particular, take everything, every issue, as a personal insult, when the discussion has nothing personally to do with them.
This behavior SCREAMS of insecurity. So what are they insecure about? My guess is their faith.
I mean if you are secure in your faith why in the world would you even visit an atheist forum. Curiosity? Well, that would account for a minute or two, but not months and months of false indignation.

Insecurity? I think so. The truth burns them like the sun, a vampire. I'm not saying that they admit to themselves that something true is actually true or that what they believe is actually not so much... Only that they must avoid that admission... Lest the become apostates and burn in the light of the sun. So they must avoid it. Try and discredit it or come against it in any way possible. The same reason indoctrination is so important to fundamentalists. It goes back to Sheldon's thread about how they so vociferously disagree with science education.
That's my thought on it. Can't wait to hear what the theists say.
Cant add anything to that Aposteriori Unum
The sort of theists who come onto our fora are heavily invested in their faith and very often heavily invested in a faith community, too. It’s a large part of who they are. Their faith defines them. We challenge their sense of self.
They are their own god. That is why atheism is a personal insult.
That is why they never disagree with god. That is why their interpretation of scripture is more important to them than the experts. They already know the mind of god, so only they can interpret it.
i guess Philippines is one of the countries that has millions of devotees of many branches of Christianity. and you can't even imagine how they are so into it, that they couldn't see how they have been deceived by their faith. you can't even apply for work if you're not one of them. you have to sign up to their group. then that's the time you can work and have a job. they take your job as ransom. and take 10% of your wage. is that even fair? they just take your wage. its compulsory. no exception if you're with them (Iglesia ni Cristo). then they'll say "you'll burn in hell for eternity if you don't follow us, cause we know the way for everlasting life with god". that's what i always hear when i encounter devoted theist have a discussion. i simply just make a big smile and walk away. i think i hurt their feelings for asking them what and how they know and telling them what i believe. on our circle of friends, most of them are theist. only me and my buddy (Albert) are the atheist. but i'm sure they know what is true. they just don't wanna question their faith.
Of course they take it personally. Many theists consider any rational discourse to be an attack on them personally.
" Childhood and adolescence
Our relationship with stuff starts early. The idea that we can own something, possess it as if a part of ourselves, is one that children grasp by the age of two. And by six, they exhibit the ‘endowment effect’, placing extra value on an object simply by virtue of it being, or having been, theirs."
The phrase, "I am a Christian" carries with it so much baggage that to challenge it challenges ;the very essence of who the person thinks they are. What does it mean to be a Christian?
1. I'm special. (No, you are just a human being like the rest of us.)
2. My life will go on after I die. (Face the facts; you have no evidence of that what so ever.)
3. God looks after me. (Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha... and the other 3 billion poor people on the planet.)
4. I have a personal relationship with Jesus. (You have a personal delusion.)
5, Prayer works (No.... it doesn't, Proved time and time again in actual experimentation.)
6. Invisible spirits are real. (No, angels, demons, demi gods and other invisible things have never been shown to have any existence in any form what so ever.
7. I have an eternal soul. (No. Not even your own bible substantiates that. If you do your research you can follow the evolution of the concept of soul from its' origin in the old testament to its new meaning in the New Testament. )
8. Anyone who says anything opposite from what I believe is doing the work of the Devil. (Or they are just stating facts.)
9. Miracles happen. (Where? Please demonstrate you claim.)
10. Atheists are just mean people. (Yes, and we will all burn in hell because we deserve it. Please thank your loving God for creating a place for us.)
If common sense were more common, more people would have it.
If you could reason with religious people, there would be no religious people.
