"The crucifix kills...."
*Just gives you a blank look before walking off*
William Peter Blaty's stupid book and the ridiculous movie it spawned are still killing people over four decades later. I hope America will get over its religious mania and move forward into the 19th century soon.
The Exorcist is the cause of it? I don't know, I find it a little harsh to blame a literary work and it's movie adaptation for the deaths of hundred of people...
After the book/film came out in the 1970s, we started to see lots of news stories just like this one. There were priests and other assorted lunatics trying to cure bipolar disease, alcoholism, and of course homosexuality by exorcising demons. In many cases the rituals were quite violent.
I don't remember even hearing the word "exorcism" before priestly mumbo-jumbo rituals were glamorized in that movie.
The woman's defence should be "god started it".
'Man crushed to death by giant crucifix dedicated to Pope John Paul II.'

The report doesn't state whether god thought the man was possessed or not.

Crucifixion can be hazardous to your health. Be sure to sterilize the nails and use clean whips for flagellation. Never share a crown of thorns.
Despite these hazards, getting nailed up still seems to be a popular Easter pastime in the Philippines.
That's it, I've now heard it all. I had to check the date of the report wasn't the 1st of April.
Religions normalize and perpetuate superstitions which certainly doesn't help the mentally frail. However, this case seems more a matter of mental illness than a religion/atheism issue. Quote from:

One neighbor told local station KFOR: “She was a very quiet person. She didn’t really talk to other people. She was just in her own little world."
Unquote.
Presumably there will be a psychiatric report before any trial and sentencing.
