When Ray Comfort said there was more proof for god than there was for the Sun.... I was speechless.
My first thought when reading your statement was, who the hell is Ray Comfort? I almost Googled him, but my second thought was, who cares if that's what he's saying.
Not as ignorant as his banana analogy.
Wth!!!
I had a little debate...with my friend (religious guy, born and raised in one of the most religious cities around here and funny, he is an intelligent guy).
His only argument is the "holy light" on easter and i never found a video with it...one that prooved that you can't proove the phenomen with science and logic. I didn't found it. Randomly, he looked it up few days later and was like "How come you didn't find any video?! There a thousands."
Me: "Well, the thing catches fire, ok, that doesn't demonstrates God, just self combustion, chemistry, stuff..."
Him: "What chemistry. I never saw that, it's impossible. This is a miracle from God." (he knows enough chemistry, he is good at it etc.)
Me: "Demonstrate God."
Him: "The HOLY LIGHT!"
Me: "Demonstrate the holy light."
And since he had no argument (like religious people do) he simply rage quit on our skype conference and didn't talk to me and my other atheist friend which was there for about 2 weeks.
I have heard a lot of different comments towards me that are ignorant but I think the biggest one is when I was told that
"Your not Atheiest your just confused. You believe in god and the Christian faith you don't don't realize you do. God will forgive you for the way you thought when you were confused just pray!"
I hate being told this. When people say this I want to ask them why they think that. Why do they think that I'm too stupid to know what I really think?? Besides how would they like me to tell it to them. If I walked up to a Christian and said you only think you believe in god but you don't. Why can't people live and let live with the decisions they make??
Thanks for the forum. Many interesting comments. Best wishes to all.
Most ignorant was "atheists don't believe in god so they can keep sinning". As if people are more likely to behave badly without the threat of hell looming, there were plenty of murderers that used religion as a justification for what they did.
I dont believe in god but i do believe the ten commandments (apart from the worship no god but me ofcourse) are worth following. The bible while made up has some wisdom just usually its ignored by those who profess to follow it.
So im not much for sinning got nothing to do with faith its just morality.
That was far from the worst thing that a theist said to me, but it is the most common super ignorant statement thing I hear.
random person in school -"hey are you a satanist" me-''no im atheist" him-"but isn't that the same thing?"
i think a few of my brain cells died when i was asked this...... multiple times..... in one day and was asked that today...... nearly hit em with my math book
The one that irks me the most is the egocentric assumption that I am a theist. I suspect they make this assumption simply because we have some things in common (e.g. citizenry, language, etc.), and since they are a theist so is everyone that has those things in common. When the opportunity arises, typically if they verbalized their assumption in some way, I correct them. Their response is most frequently one of shock and dismay...it can be amusing.
i get that one a lot. well when i say a lot i mean most of the time.... now that i think about it all the time. it can be very amusing but it kinda makes me sad that they make the assumption that everyone believes the same and they don't think twice about it that someone doesn't believe the same thing. and when i tell them i am atheist there whole demeanor toward me changes its kinda like they just found the anti-christ(lol) but hey i doesn't really surprise me i live in the south like DEEP south so its kinda the norm for me now
It really is weird how people kind of suppose and not only impose their views on others!
"Debating" with a fundamentalist Catholic, I tell them that there is no proof that God exists, and they say...
"I pity you. You do not know how to love. You have a hole in your heart."
My friend once made a rant about my posting of atheist views in social media sites. Replied that if he, like all Christians, are free to proclaim their faith and beliefs to the world, then why can't I do the same?
Anybody watch the Nye-Ham debate. Ham said plenty of jaw droppingly ignorant things. I sat there and wondered if he wasn't just putting us all on.
Yeah I did, Ham did so bad other well know theist were coming out and begging him politely to shut up! Speaking of which I was wondering if one of our own was there Pek where were you during that debate? was not sure if it was you but then at the end the guy I suspected went up and said something to NYE. Ham reminded me of SOG in the way he never answered Bill Nye's questions, keep trying to put his own definitions on things as well as Sort of seeminly had his own view of Christianity and it the world that may not apply to all Christians.
Yeah, that whole historical science stuff he talked about really bugged me. Never once did he mention how the bible is in any means an accurate historical source.
"Logic and evidence is not enough for me"
lol
you were born and baptized a catholic etc...........
As if someone born under such circumstances actually had a choice in the mater ¿
"Atheists do not exist. You are just a poser. You have to believe in something."
Oddly, it was my ex. She is a doctor in biology and all, but still couldn't conceive that an atheist wouldn't go on homicidal rampages. When I realized she'd kill everyone she could if there was no god, I stopped trying to convert her.
So many times I have been in the same situation, people like that are one of the cornerstone reasons it think religion is important.
Well the other day my biology teacher told me that the skeletons of early man are no evidance for evolution.apperently according to her god punished them and so they became "deformed".I wanted to punch my self with a hammer.I live in a pretty religious country so I couldent really contradict her
Remember when the bible said the sun revolved around the earth. And the church once swore the world was flat.
The one that always gets to me is that "All Atheists are angry and hate god." Or, "You are only being hateful because deep down you are still searching for the answers." Both of these responses tend to make me angry and hateful, but definitely not toward an imaginary entity that watches me masturbate and has made a special imaginary place where I will live for eternity in agony.
I really admire your guts guys upon refuting and contradicting those ridiculous claims presented by the different individual with different personal beliefs. Of course, it sounds really absurd when that particular local preacher claimed that "there is no such thing as atheism due to doubtfulness, unhappiness, and the like they were experiencing. In the very first place, every person, as long as you are a rational animal (human being), experience all kinds of distress - for we are living in an imperfect world, a world full of uncertainty. Me, You, Atheist, Agnostic, Theist, everyone of us encountered such kind of experience. However, it should be noted that not because Atheists were always doubtful, it does not meant to say that they already commit some carelessness, negligence or the worst - inexistent as what the preacher asserted. Most of the times, we doubt in order to seek the truth and to attain true knowledge, wisdom or the like, and therefore achieve ultimate happiness.
However, that claim Paul Hugo when you asserted, "becoming an atheist was probably the happiest decision I've ever made" is a very inconsistent and insufficient claim. Could you please elaborate specific examples or situations about that proposition? Cogent arguments are applicable before some illogical point of view might be committed. Thanks :)
