If god actually exists, why do believers, namely Christians claim they have faith in god? Faith by definition is trusting something without any evidence to support that trust. So how do they know that god exists, and this god is the god of whatever book they follow? To me to have such religious faith is forsaking skepticism for comfort.

This is very true Tman. I think faith completely contradicts their entire belief system.
Most people will look the other way and just pretend that everything they believe in makes sense.
This is as much part of religion as any other aspect of their belief system, blind faith I mean, and this is why there is so much contradiction because most explanations lack logic.
Faith seems to be the easiest way to go about life. It's easier because it keeps you on a "safe" track, just in case there is a hell after all. This is why most people opt for it.
yesterday i went to have dinner with a christian couple (¨very virtuous¨he is married but not to her). he converted after hitting the bottom; he was addicted to drugs, sex and liquor. he said that one day he was walking while being high on drugs and he got himself in church acording to him, the church was empty, inside there was smoke and he felt lots of hands in his back, he felt he was forgiven for his shortcomings and that he was reborned in christ with that experience. I did not reply with the obvious answer: you were high on drugs probably that was an hallucination! because may be he needs god in order to keep his life together.
