I recommend: The god delusion by Richard Dawkins and The whore of babylon by Fernando Vallejos.

I liked Jean Lipman-Blumen's The Allure of Toxic Leaders. Besides describing toxic leaders, the author deals extensively with people's need for toxic leadership. We sometimes create our own.

I think the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a great book if you are into humorous treatment of biblical subjects like creation, the end of the world, and pan-galactic gargle blasters!

I saw this mentioned on one of the other threads and thought it should be brought up here, American Gods. It gets into the dying out of old gods and the replacements with the new gods we sacrifice our lives to.

Ernest Becker's Denial of

Ernest Becker's Denial of Death: Winner of the Pulitzer prize in 1974 and the culmination of a life's work, The Denial of Death is Ernest Becker's brilliant and impassioned answer to the "why" of human existence. In bold contrast to the predominant Freudian school of thought, Becker tackles the problem of the vital lie -- man's refusal to acknowledge his own mortality. In doing so, he sheds new light on the nature of humanity and issues a call to life and its living that still resonates more than thirty years after its writing. Another great Becker offering was Escape from Evil.

If you want to better understand socially constructed realities and why worldviews clash, Becker is the one to read.

Great thread.

Great thread.

I'll be boring to an extent, but a book that I believe every Atheist should read is the obvious one - the King James Bible. You pay attention all the way through (and it is a tough and boring read), you won't need another book to confirm your atheism.

A rough list I'd go by would be as follows:

1. The Bible - King James version. No modern version, no "Bible reader", no study guide. Read the whole thing from start to finish.
2. The God Delusion - Richard Dawkins
3. Why Evolution is True - Jerry Coyne
4. Evolution: What the Fossils Say - Donald Prothero
5. Your Inner Fish - Neil Shubin
6. The Ancestor's Tale - Richard Dawkins
7. On the Origin of Species - Charles Darwin*
8. The Better Angels of our Nature - Steven Pinker
9. How the Mind Works - Steven Pinker
10. Making of the Fittest - Sean Carroll

* - slightly tougher read, purely due to the 1859 prose, but it's still great.
