Free speech is being threatened all over the eastern hemisphere by those who wish to silence others who speak out against religion. Freedom is a gift, which when allowed to flourish, will flush out bigotry all by itself. No censorship required. In fact, censorship and coercion can be outright counterproductive.

Proverbs 13:24 reads “He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.” The biblical concept of "spare the rod and spoil the child" has encouraged and condoned hundreds of millions of cases of child abuse throughout history. Blind devotion to such monstrous nonsense continues to taint Christianity with brutality to this very day, and is still killing kids.

Millions, if not billions of people worldwide pray for health, good fortune, and spiritual guidance every day. There’s a good reason why so many people regularly spend time praying, and that’s because prayer is powerful.

One thing that annoys me even more than hearing stupidity from theists is hearing it from an atheist. There are some new atheists who are as blind followers as they were when they were sitting in the pews and there are some old atheists who were never firing on all cylinders to begin with. Here are some of the silliest things I’ve hears from atheists.

I’m not interested in making a claim about which is the “better” atheism but I am interested in the type of “unbelief” that we present and promote within our communities. Secularism shouldn’t be interested in competing because it doesn’t stand as an alternative to religion but rather a political philosophy that stands alongside belief and nonbelief. I think atheists should be championing secularism in the public/political realm.

What does “sacred” mean? Does the concept have a place in atheist living? There is a common sentiment in atheist circles that no one and nothing deserves our devotion, but I think there’s some truth in the assertion that “we all worship something”. Is awe important and do rituals have a role in atheist life?

Basically, prayer is talking to God/gods/nature or making appeals/requests. There are almost an infinite number of ways to pray. Prayer can be spontaneous or use the prayers others have written. It can be modern or ancient. But ultimately, the idea behind prayer is that a person is communicating with a divine entity or entities in some way to express something or ask for something. Sounds simple enough right? WRONG!

Kids have a lot to teach us if we’re willing to learn. Their questions reveal much about the lessons they are learning from the adults around them. We need to take the time to hear them and adjust our conversations.

Atheists face tragedy without the protective mechanisms of prayer and a belief in an afterlife. I think, in many ways, this is a gift we can give to our communities in times of grief – offering it gently and with sensitivity, mostly by example. Atheists are just as sensitive, compassionate and empathetic as theists. We are just as capable of holding space for the grieving. In addition, we are able to model practical things that can be done to help, taking action side by side with people of faith.

Evolution is a theory that Darwin famously proposed in the 19th century. Today, it is widely accepted among scientists and biologists as fact - no major scientific institute disputes it. However, some religious followers such as Creationists still dispute it. An argument often heard is that "there are gaps in the fossil record", but does this argument hold up?

The Value of Atheist Blogs

There is social stigma that surrounds atheism in many communities, a stigma which causes many atheists to hide their true selves rather than proclaim their views proudly and in public.

Fortunately, not every atheist feels this way, and there are a few atheist bloggers maintaining blogs on a variety of atheist-related topics. These are valuable resources for other atheists, and it is well worth exploring them for the advice, life experience and information they contain.

What Atheist Blogs Might Contain

Not every atheist blogger blogs about atheism directly. There are many topics that might interest atheists and topics that value from the viewpoint of a non-believer. Here are just some of the blogs you may find written by other atheists:

These are just a few of the many topics that might be covered by an atheist blogger. As you explore the world of atheist blogging, you may find a variety of topics that will interest you and appeal to your views about the world.

Why Read a Blog About Atheism?

Being an atheist can be lonely and isolating, especially if you must hide your beliefs from your friends and family; a community of those with similar beliefs can be truly beneficial to both the blogger and the readers. These blogs are especially helpful when they provide some real-world advice for living as an atheist in a religious word. It can be a challenge to find atheist-friendly parenting advice, for example, from other bloggers; seeking out atheist bloggers will yield far better results.

Another benefit of atheist blogging is the ability to learn about a wide array of viewpoints and personal philosophies. Unlike religions, where members must subscribe to specific beliefs, atheists come from a wide spectrum of backgrounds and philosophical principles. Reading about these different viewpoints can open your eyes to ideas outside of your own and help to generate interesting conversations with other readers and even friends and family outside of the blog.

Sharing a blog about various atheism topics can be a good way to bridge the topic with your family and bring up a discussion about your views on god and religion, providing you with a jumping-off point for valuable communication opportunities. You never know; you might even find after sharing a post that there are a few closet atheists in your social group.
