JAMESTOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - Morgan Kuiper, an 11-year-old girl, is recovering at home after a bullet was surgically removed from her left shoulder. Her parents say it was their worst nightmare Saturday when Morgan returned to the house after playing outside.
“She’s got some 4-H animals and, you know, very outdoorsy type, active girl that way,” the girl’s father, Hib Kuiper, says about his daughter. Morgan is the oldest of five children in the family and she enjoys spending time reading or jumping on the trampoline at the family’s Jamestown Township home. She was playing outside on Saturday evening when this accident happened. “All of a sudden we heard this panicked scream,” Missy Kuiper, Morgan’s mother, recalled.
The girl said, panicky: “My arm is numb, my arm is numb, I can’t feel my arm.” She also said that she heard some gunshots. Morgan’s parents rushed her to the hospital. The next day, doctors performed surgery to remove the bullet from her shoulder. Authorities think the bullet was fired by some people shooting target practice — it’s unclear from what range and which direction. Jamestown Township officials say there is no ordinance prohibiting shooting on private property.
“It was something that will never happen again and we believe that God directed that bullet to go to her but into the right spot that nothing was damaging,” Missy Kuiper, Morgan’s mother, said. What actually happened that Saturday evening? A merciful God was looking after a little girl and He directed that bullet so that it would only pierce her shoulder? The parents are grateful to God because He allowed only one harmless injury instead of damage to vital areas of the little girl’s body. One might ask: Why didn’t God guide the bullet so it missed the girl entirely, causing no damage at all? Well, in that case, He wouldn’t even be noticed nor mentioned, and that’s bad. That’s how He plays — the wise old God.
Just one more thing. God isn’t the problem in this case. The problem is the way two adults have twisted logic, and their reaction to something which could have been a tragedy. At least the girl was very lucky and that’s a great thing.
