An imam in the United Kingdom stirred anger after a video of him lecturing how to stone women to death went viral on social media, with his mosque facing an investigation from authorities after public funding was stopped after the video emerged on the Internet.

The video showed the imam, Shaykh Zakaullah Saleem of the Green Lane Masjid in Birmingham, lecturing an audience, telling them how to properly stone women to death by burying them waist-deep so their modesty could be protected.
“According to the Sharia (Islamic law), when it comes to women, there must be a hole dug in the earth, in the ground, and she must cover up to half of the body,” the imam said.

The video went viral on X (previously known as Twitter), with one post showing the lecture garnering over 10,000 likes and 5,900 reposts. However, some Twitter users expressed doubt whether the imam endorsed the practice.
“It's not clear from this clip that he is advocating it.” David Hirsh, a senior lecturer in sociology at Goldsmiths, University of London, said on X regarding the video. “Maybe he's just describing one description of it from some authoritative source in order to explain why it should no longer be carried out, according to another authoritative source?”

But another video of the same lecture showed Imam Shaykh Zakaullah Saleem explaining that stoning women to death is punishment for zina, or the sin of having illicit sexual relations in Islam.
“The person who commits zina, according to the Islamic or the Sharia, whenever the Sharia is established, the punishment (for) the adulterer – man or woman – the punishment for them is, if they are married, then they will be stoned to death. If they are unmarried, they will be beaten with 100 lashes in front of a big Muslim gathering,” Zakaullah said.
No, this is what they believe.
In a properly constituted "Islamic state", of course.
Here's another look. "Make sure lots of Muslims see the flogging and stoning! Show no mercy!"
Funnily enough, not long ago, some lovely lads came up with just that idea in the Middle East. pic.twitter.com/2AitwKtMCA— habibi (@habibi_uk) August 22, 2023
Zakaullah serves as the head imam and the head of education in the Green Lane Masjid, and he worked in several roles before joining the mosque as an imam. The Green Lane Masjid has been notorious for hosting controversial speakers such as Abu Usamah, who describes women as intellectually “deficient” and that “it takes two witnesses of a woman to equal the one witness of the man.”
Another imam at the mosque, Mustafa Abu Rayyan, said that a wife “needs to also fulfill his [her husband's] physical desires” and that she should be "obedient and respectful to him.”

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport recently awarded the mosque 2.2 million British pounds (equivalent to more than 2.7 million US dollars) from the British government’s Youth Investment Fund to expand its youth services this August.
But after the video of the lecture went viral, and after the National Secular Society, an organization that promotes secularism in the United Kingdom, wrote to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media, and Sport expressing their concern over the mosque’s controversial history, the government paused its grant and planned to investigate the Green Lane Masjid.
