A Kenyan nun, Anna Ali, who died two years ago maybe headed towards sainthood as her own book along with family and followers claim that she “photographed God.”
Ali was the first of five siblings to be born to a Muslim father and a Christian mother and she mostly lived her quiet life in isolation, occasionally interacting with members of her church, the institution that she joined in 1979. Reportedly, Ali used to shed tears of blood, an occurrence that shocked everyone who witnessed it. She started falling ill from a young age while attending Kipkelion Primary School in Kericho County, which was run by the Catholic Sisters of Mercy. When her health refused to improve and all treatments failed, Ali was forced to seek healing crusades.
“I had been sick for about seven years. I used to bleed from my fingers and toes. My mother took me to many different hospitals, but I was not cured. From there I heard that there was a healing crusade in Nairobi, which was being held by the Catholic Church. When it was announced that those who needed to be healed move forward, I prayed and asked God to heal me. In that process, the words of God touched me. I fell down and I was carried to a safe place unconscious, but when I came to myself, I realized that I was not bleeding from my fingers and toes anymore,” she wrote in her own book.

While her bleeding seemed to have been cured miraculously after this incident, in 1990, her right arm became almost paralyzed. Even though she could not attend a language course that she had signed up for in order to rise the ranks in her order, she claims God sent her messages regularly that kept her strong and helped her perform her duties. She confesses in her book that she spoke to the Lord while in trance while a fellow nun Regina Mwamba recorded her sessions. However, when she narrated these interactions to those around her, they refused to believe her.
“I was revealing what God had told me… these are the real words from God, ‘Listen to me I am above this earth, I have allowed you and you alone to photograph me for them to know the truth’. I managed to photograph Him but what surprised me is that when I took a full image, it came out as a passport size picture of Christ… he did not want people to know what he looks like… These people including close friends did not believe me with the camera I was using… they bought for me another camera which also produced the same image,” she wrote in her book.
Bishop Korir at the church confirms everything Ali has claimed in her book saying, “The lady had shown us several wonderful miracles, which I as a bishop have never seen in my life. Even the cameras she used to photograph the alleged Lord were later blown up after she finished taking the pictures. We did not believe and bought a new one. Surprisingly it was also damaged, according to the technician who attended both of them.”
In a separate incident, a photographer attending a seminar headed by Ali took a photograph of her and the image allegedly revealed Mary, mother of Jesus, in the background. Reportedly, these photographs are available even today at the Cathedral Church in Eldoret.
According to Korir, the process for Ali’s sainthood cannot be initiated before three years are allowed to elapse, as that is a requirement by the Roman Catholic Church.
