After pop boy band One Direction posted a video of two of its members smoking pot and joking about drug use, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference has called for the band to be banned in the Philippines, saying such negative influence might poison the country’s youth.
In the video, Louis Tomlinson records Zayn Malik smoking a joint in the backseat of an SUV as the band drives around Peru, where they performed on April 27 this year and are expected to perform again in March 2015.
“So here we are, leaving Peru, joint lit. Happy days,” Tomlinson says at the beginning of the video as the vehicle leaves a parking garage.
He asks his bandmate Malik sitting next to him in a Bob Marley tank top, “What do you think Zayn, about that type of content?” and Malik responds, “Very controversial.”
“Do not lead [the youth in] the wrong direction,” said Conegundo Garganta, executive secretary of the conference. He said the video is a “challenge to the sense of culture” of Filipinos, adding, “Why admit poisonous influences? There is enough poison in our society. Parents should stop their children from buying the expensive concert tickets of [drug addicts].”
Marijuana is illegal in Peru though the law is not as stringent about its usage. Possession is not a punishable crime if it is for immediate and personal consumption in quantities not more than eight grams.
