On December 20th, the Illinois State Capitol Rotunda featured a holiday art display from The Satanic Temple. The temple, a nontheistic religious group, promotes reproductive rights and separation of church and state. On the 25th, they celebrated the holiday of Sol Invictus, a “celebration of being unconquered by superstition and consistent in the pursuit and sharing of knowledge.” This year’s celebration featured the “satanic deity” Baphomet, depicted as a swaddled baby, similar to Jesus in a nativity scene. The Christian community in the area was outraged hearing about the theme. Catholic Bishop Thomas John Paprocki, of the Diocese of Springfield, stated to the State Journal, Satanic displays “should have no place in this Capitol.” The Satanic Temple attempted to invite Bishop Paprocki to the unveiling of their display. However, the bishop refused. Lucien Greaves, co-founder of The Satanic Temple, in response to Paprocki’s refusal to attend, stated, “Our real message is to re-establish pluralism… It doesn’t mean that people with opposing viewpoints have to be in conflict.”

- Blatant Injustice for Imprisoned Nigerian Atheist Activist Mubarak Bala
Location: Nigeria
December 22nd was the 600th day that Mubarak Bala spent in police custody. Bala, an Ex-Muslim atheist and President of the Humanist Association of Nigeria, was arrested at his home in Kaduna on April 28th, 2020 for allegedly insulting Prophet Mohammed via social media. He was taken to the Muslim-majority state of Kano where he faced blasphemy accusations and charges from religious figures. Prosecutors claim that Bala confessed to the charges while imprisoned when his attorney was not present. Even though Nigeria’s Customary Constitution punishes blasphemy with a possible 2-year sentence, in regions where Sharia Law is applied, blasphemers are punished with death sentences. Bala has already spent nearly 2 years incarcerated, but has not yet faced trial. James Ibor, Bala’s attorney, said that Bala has been denied access to health care, kept in solitary confinement, and forced “to worship the Islamic way” since he’s been imprisoned.

On December 14th, Rahul Khan, a 22-year-old Muslim from Husangabad village in Haryana’s Palwal district, succumbed to his injuries after being assaulted. On the day of the incident, Rahul went to a wedding ceremony with his friends. He was accused by his friends of stealing a phone and beaten severely, leading to his eventual death. The next day, his family was told that Rahul had been killed in a hit-and-run collision. The post-mortem report however clearly showed that the cause of death was assault. Soon, Khan’s family was made aware of footage of their son being beaten. In the viral video that led to the arrest of all three suspects, one of the men allegedly repeated “I am Hindu” as Khan was being attacked. That was enough for Khan’s family to declare Rahul Khan’s murder a hate crime. As of now, the police consider this incident as an act of vigilantism, with faith having nothing to do with the murder.
