Months before Jonathan Saenz was chosen as the president of Texas Values, an anti-gay group, his wife left him for another woman. According to court documents acquired by local media, Saenz’s ex-wife was already dating another woman when she sought divorce from her husband in August 2011. At the time, Saenz displayed a sudden change in values – turning into Texas’ most infamous anti-gay politician from an ordinary socially conservative politician.
In the time between his wife filing for divorce and being granted one, Saenz became the president of Texas Values, after the group split from another conservative organization that Saenz was involved with earlier. Texas Values is best known for opposing same-sex marriage and non-discrimination laws that secure members of the LGBT community in the state. On previous occasions, Saenz has personally voiced his support for gay conversion therapy as well.
In her appeal for divorce, Saenz’s ex-wife said her marriage with Saenz was insupportable due to conflict of personalities. She also said that the discord destroyed the legal ends of a marriage and prevented reasonable expectations of reconciliation. During the course of the divorce, the presiding judge granted Saenz’s request that his ex-wife’s lover not be permitted in the presence of the three children that the couple have together. However, that decision was reversed eventually after his ex-wife claimed that she did not think it appropriate for her husband to control her in any way. She also stood up for her girlfriend saying she did not mean any harm to the children.
As of now, both Saenz and his ex-wife share custody of their children and each of them is free to direct the religious and moral training of the three kids.
