Firstly, I think there is no 'afterlife'. I believe death is the same as being born into this world, where most people don't remember much about their early childhood or being a toddler as well or as strongly as they do when they're grown up. Life suddenly 'happens', death is the same. Suddenly from nothing, we are born, its like that black tunnel that fades when our eyes first meet the light and then whatever is around us. Death is the opposite, light fades till there is only black, and we lose most of our ability to feel or comprehend consciousness. Death is the equivalent to being injected with a general anesthetic drug where you are put to sleep, but the only difference is, the effects are permanent.
Meaning to life is all about what life you live in that moment and whether you choose to cherish them. God is not needed, I say, why the hell would we want to please a God who doesn't exist for the rest of our lives? Waste even more time praying, chanting, attending church etc, and I feel that's precious time wasted. Human lives are short. The point to life is spending time with loved ones and close friends and being there for them as they for you. We should embrace death as part of life. As atheists, we should teach the next generation about ways to improve the quality of life, enjoy it, to not fear it, as we only have one life.
It would be depressing to listen to a religious person debating whether life is worth living if there is no afterlife. In fact, I see that as a mortal fear of death and a weakness in doubting their existence. I don't want to listen to that.
